News Jason Isaacs Joins Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Lorca

Discovery is breaking a lot of ground when it comes to the "formula of Star Trek", as it's the first series whose "POV character" isn't the Commanding Officer, the first series to be primarily serialized, the first series to feature a 13-episode first season, and the first series where the main characters don't all serve on the series' 'primary ship'.

This is a huge piece of casting, fair play.

There's a lot of assumptions in this thread that he's only now come on board, but given they've been filming for around 6 weeks or so, can we be sure Isaacs hasn't been there during that time? Apart from that one photo leak, it's been a ridiculously tight set, so you never know?

And what I like is that while changes are being made to some of the formula, the basis behind the series will follow the best moments of Star Trek. Hopefully that will come to fruition in having some really good stories and adventure!

Wow, this feels like one hell of a coup!

Everyone thinks of Lucius Malfoy, but I always remember him first for his role on The West Wing.

Oh, a white guy...
Well, the show's main protagonist character is Lt. Cmdr. Rainsford, or "Number One", who is a black woman (played by Sonequa Martin-Green), and the captain of the Shenzou is an Asian Woman (played by Michelle Yeoh), who will be a recurring character. Another officer on the Shezou is played by an actor of Indian descent.

Sure -- there are white guys and white gals, too. However, it's not as if the entire cast is white guys. As I said, the main character of this show is a black woman.

I agree with some of the other posters, it's very likely he will only be around for season 1 and will "hand the reins" to the show's main character. He isn't the biggest star, but he is very big for ST. It won't be cheap to have him on the show at all.

It's not exactly as much as a death sentence for the character as it would be casting Sean Bean, but I'd say the Cappy's prospects at surviving are low.

Actually none of this sounds promising to me.

Exactly my thoughts. So far, there have been nearly no leaks. That klingon lunch time photo could very well have been guerilla marketing and let slip through on purpose. He could very well be already working for the six weeks...

The main character of the show is a black woman.... Why is it so bad that one of the side characters is a white guy?

Why is everybody being so defensive? :p

My point was more "hey, another guy". Give me a call when it turns out that this will not be the sixth Trek show with a predominantly male cast.

Then I think you need to broaden your perceptions of what Star Trek can be.
I remain cautiously optimistic. Any Star Trek is better than no Star Trek. I'll definitely pay for the CBS All Access from day one of release. However, I reserve to right to be hopeful for the show to be what I want it to be.

The show has already established, even now, that it's not going to be "Star Trek as usual", so if that's what you "want it to be", you're going to be disappointed and should therefore broaden your perceptions of what Star Trek "ought to be" or else just not watch the show period.

Yep, Isaacs is a good choice. Almost a shame he's not the star. Sort of. ;)
