News Jason Isaacs Joins Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Lorca

This is fantastic casting news! Since I can't at this moment pour through everything, is it a given that the Captain dies in this series?

All I remember is that the series' point of view is from someone other than the Captain, but I didn't think that meant they would be killed. Just that they would be there, and we don't see them all the time. It's from Number One's point of view.

Oh no no. It's not a given. People are just speculating that might happen.

Just because Rainsford/Number One is our "POV character" doesn't mean that the rest of the Discovery's crew aren't going to play important roles in the story, so, as others have said, it's definitely not a "given" that Jason Isaacs' Captain Lorca won't last the season.

Not a given no, but since the original synopsis was that we'd see "Number One" progress through the ranks, and this being TV, it kinda suggests he'll die (or be injured / incapacitated in some way) and she'll have to step up in the heat of battle or some other emergency situation to be the new captain.

More dramatic than her just being promoted peacefully and means that an in demand actor like Issac's isn't bound by a multi year TV contract on top of his other multi - year TV contract.

If something happens to Captain Lorca in Season 1 of Discovery, it most likely won't happen until the end of the season, since the series is supposed to have a defined serialized arc (ala Babylon 5).

Great news to hear! Issacs is a dream casting choice, imo, for Trek.

:) colour me very happy right now!

Awesome news, Isaccs is a great actor.
I wonder if the fact that he's coming in after they've already been filming awhile means that we won't see him until later in the season?

@JD They started filming in late January/early February, right? That means they've only been filming for about a month or so, so having Isaacs come in as a Series Regular now doesn't really say much, to me, anyway, about how large a role his character does or doesn't have.

I agree. It may depend on what sequences to be filmed were the more complex ones, whether they need some more attention in post-production, any number of reasons. The scenes with Captain Lorca may not demand as much from a visual aspect. He may be the kind of Captain who doesn't go on landing party missions as much and stays on Discovery, any number of reasons.

Does anybody know how long it's taking them to film an individual episode? Because knowing that would give us an idea as to how quickly Captain Lorca shows up in the series relative to its overall narrative and seasonal episode count.

Given the early idea as to how the seasons would work (how a story can be told over multiple episodes), it may be hard to tell that, as well as if they're filming in sequence, which is not always a given.
