Janeway "Deserved" To Die? (Spoilers?)

I think the books are fine on a "personal basis" canon level - that is, if you like it, accept it, and if you don't, don't. Either way, a future series or movie may contradict it.

That's the crux of it right there. I could give a flying fig whether the books are canon or not. The fact is if you're a fan of any Trek captain EXCEPT Janeway you can look forward to more full-length novels coming out that features your favorite. Not only have Janeway fans been waiting a while but when one finally comes out it's to see her killed? Plus, there will be no more future adventures? Boo hoo?

The hell with that!

That's not even remotely true. If you had said "any Trek captain who was captain and star in one of the TV shows," then yes.

Isn't that splitting hairs? After all, how many people automatically think of Sulu, etc. when they hear the phrase "Trek captains"? I'm catching a whiff of straw in that argument. ;)

The fact is if you're a Janeway fan it looks like there will be no more books in the forseeable future. Sure, they might bring her back - or they might not. There are no guarantees here.

Personally, if they bring her back it will make them look weak for making the decision to kill her in the first place and then reversing on it. I think for that reason, it's unlikely she will be brought back to life.

It's not a man of straw if you believe it yourself right? :p People that read TrekLit enough to care about Janeway's death probably have many other captains in mind than the Big Five, and probably there are more who care more about Captain Sulu and The Lost Era than about Jon Archer.

I've already said that one of the things I liked about the DS9 relaunch was moving Sisko to the background and Kira (among others) to the foreground. I'd've been perfectly happy from a things-change perspective if Picard for some reason hadn't survived Destiny (though I would cetainly not have been fine with it overall because of how it would affect poor Bev Crusher) or in the near future was somehow killed or moved to the background (retirement to raise a child maybe?)

There are no guarantees anymore than there were guarantees that Sisko would come back - and in the main TrekLit verse, Kirk hasn't been and won't be resurrected.

I wouldn't mind if Janeway came back, whether as regular human a la Vash or more Q-esque; the seeds of their deision being reversed/abrogated have already been planted, so I don't think that would make them look weak. I trust these people too much and am sure they'd have a good tale to tell. But, for the reason you've said Praetor I hope she doesn't come back the same, or just return to being an Admiral - we need to maintain that things have been changed irrevocably

"The adventures of Young janeway" can be set at any point up to about three weeks before she died.

Besides, because of the relaunch, does that adamantly preclude any books set during the series, before or just after?

Back when I would read these things with an appetite I used to love how all the TOS adventures were set all over the damn place compare to the TNG that always tried to stay present with the show that could never keep up to date or figure out what was going through Bermans mind at the time... I still shudder at this stray thought passing through Picards head about how "beautiful" Pulaski's eyes were because the author "Peter David" (again) was overthinking things.

If Janeway would have died would have changed the show, in fact the show could have benefited from a death a major character.

TNG- Tasha Yar death lead to Worf being more developed and changed the chemical of the cast

DS9- Death of Dax, similar situation and added to the drama of the series arc

"The Adventures of Young Janeway." :rommie:

Does she have a cute pet/sidekick and lotsa wacky pals? Chakotay, the lusty loaner. Tuvok, the nerd. Tom, the cool kid. B'Elanna, the hotheaded chick jock. Harry, the boring guy. Transfer students Kes and Neelix.

And some chick named Annika that moves away in the middle of the series. :p

Together, they tool around in Janeway's aptly named "Alpha Flyer" and solve mysteries. Jinkies!

Yeah, but considering the Get Out Of Jail Free card that was the Q factor, they were hardly looking like a pillar of story strength and conviction in the first place. So I don't think your reasoning holds on this one.

Sorry, I should have said "the further" adventures of Young Janeway.

The book was crap.

The Worf "novellas' were much more interesting.

They may have been leaving themselves an out, it's true. I suspect it's more like the equivalent of saying that there would always be another Kirk in the Nexus in "Generations" after his death. It's their way of sending him (and her) off to a type of immortality. Valhalla, if you will.

^ "Voyager Babies, they'll make your dreams come truuuuuuuuuuuue"

Well played, sir. It would air after "Watchmen Babies: V for Vacation." :)

The Worf novellas were pretty decent. I have a couple of those. (It's remarkable how, as a kid, anything with "star Trek" on it becomes instant gift material.) I had no idea they made Janeway ones. I'll take your word on their quality... :vulcan:

You're right about the "personal basis" thing.

As for future series and movies, well I don't think there will be any future Voyager series or movies.

And I really hope that no one comes up with the idea of a "recycled" Voyager movie. Just the thought of seing other actors impersonate the Voyager characters gives me nightmares.

"You say you want a Voyager movie
well, you know
you don't know what you'll get
you say you need a Voyager movie
now that's something you'll regret
'cause if you're talking 'bout recycling
then you know that you can count me out
'cause that's the way it's gonna be
all right"

Ah, I'm in a constructive mood today, just couldn't help re-writing the old Beatles song "Revolution". Sorry John, your lyrics are better! ;)

Actually I wouldn't mind but then I didn't mind the TOS reboot either. Whatever it takes to see these characters in action again. ;)

Yeah, I think that different actors would be so 'different' altogether I wouldn't mind either, it'd feel like an alternate universe. And we'd be free to see if we liked it and if not then just not watch, but be glad the brand was being promoted so the old stuff may be recycled more too.

Regarding the new film it's great to see trek figures back in supermarkets and stuff, it's definitely led to more conversations about Voyager, TNG and DS9 for me recently :)

Don't get me wrong - it would have to be done right. The reason the new Trek movie works for me is that it's obvious that each of the actors was in love with the character he/she was playing. If you were to put together a cast without the same degree of passion it wouldn't work, imo.

Yes it was very well done indeed, the new actors had really done their research which was great to see. A rewritten Voyager could be magnificent if done like that, tbh when this subject came up I was just thinking of all the chances I'd get to talk about the original and I didn't think I'd be able to actually watch different people but if they were as good as that I would.

I must admit that the actors in the new movie did a good job, better than I expected. That thing was handled very good. I only wish that those who made the movie hadn't come up with that planet destruction thing.

But Voyager..........? No! :(

I'm bummed about Vulcan being destroyed but perhaps the next movie will be about them trying to undo that event? Overall, I'm sick of time travel as plot device but it would be great to get Amanda back. The Sarek/Amanda relationship is one of Trek's more fascinating ones.

As for Voyager sure there's still a chance for the original cast to get back together. After one or two of them are gone though a reboot would make sense.
