How did Janeway and Chakotay become so close? I look forward to some replies.
Chuckles put a little pouch of coffee grinds in his pocket every day so that every time she got a cup of coffee, the aroma would remind of her of him. After that it was just a matter of time.

Compatible personalities, combined with pure animal magnetism. If one of them hadn't been captain (see TNG's "Lessons" for why this is a real issue), they would have been married with two kids by the time Voyager made it home.

Well, first the Earth cooled. And then the dinosaurs came, but they all got too big and fat and they turned into oil.
But it was Ok, because then these monkeys came along, and discovered fire, invented wheels, and eventually learned how to use dinosaur oil to make things go.

i would say first contact regarding mutual deeper sympathy took place when Chakotay told Janeway about the animal guide stuff and she wanted to find out about the animal guide dedicated to her (Season 1 if i remember correctly) Maybe even first contact regarding some romantic moments or even questions between them both.

Their couple name is Janeway.
If we were using portmanteau shipping terminology, "Jakotay" seems as good as anything.
If the two had children together, I expect they would have Janeway's last name, since Chakotay has none.
This thread is not very far from the bones of its ancestors.
