James Kirk in "Discovery"?

Indeed, Gene Himself actually said "Star Trek would be shit if we listened to the fans."
Yet it was through "listening to the fans" that Leonard Nimoy was push more to the front, given more lines, and more character development. Nimoy resonated with the fans and TPTB listened.

That's what listening to the fans results in.

Which reportedly pissed Roddenberry off, so we can see why he later developed such disdain about listening to the fans.

So, the fans get it right once and are given carte blanche?

The 1960s. This is kind of stretching a little back.

There are examples I can think of that are more recent. Bald Klingons for one. "We're tired of prequels!" for another. Then, paradoxically, "We want a Pike Series!"

Well, isn't the whole second season basically bending because of fan criticism? As mentioned, the Klingons were given hair, in response to complaints about the crew being unlikeable we get personable and charming Pike added to the main cast. Fans complained about the holographic communicators, it's written into the show that Pike refuses to use them and arranges to have them removed from the Enterprise. The Enterprise itself abandons the Starfleet design aesthetic and lineage established in the first season to something more compatible with TOS. And then to silence the crowd complaining about "prequels suck" and asking why no one in the other shows ever referenced this stuff, the ship travels into the distant future, and Starfleet classifies information about it and its crew as top secret.

And truth be told, caving to fan pressure like that isn't one of the show's most shining accomplishments.

I'm not too particularly crazy about them bending as far backwards as they did during the second season either. I was just listing examples they listened to.

If someone is well-intentioned and wants to like the show, I think they should be heard even if their suggestions aren't followed. And, more often than not, they shouldn't be followed. Professionals in entertainment taking advice from amateurs makes no sense. The only thing that's useful is seeing if the majority of viewers responds to one thing more favorably than another.

But when it comes to some brainwashed disciple of Doomcock, MechaRandom42, or Midnight's Edge who's a member of The Fandom Menace: their "input" can go straight into the waste basket where it belongs. Since they're parroting people who make money off of being negative no matter what, and you can tell who their sources are from their talking points, listening to them serves no creative purpose.

It isn't a matter of all or nothing.

There's nothing wrong with listening to consumer feedback, TPTB can listen to general trends, and apply 20/20 hindsight to what they have been doing, some of which could have been ill-considered.

They attempted to do exactly that with DSC based upon fan expression and interests while still allowing creativity to be expressed by the shows creators.

And yet, now its being accused of being "too dark."
