By "Contemporary Trek" I'm guessing that it means the Enterprise has lot's of "aztecking" panels and swept back nacelles that aren't cylindrical in cross section and that the overall look of the ship is more aerodynamic than TOS Enterprise. I'd guess the sensor array was gone as well replaced by something more like the ones in the movie.

How the hell do you get that from his comments? I don't see any of that is his comments at all.

You might as well say the new Enterprise will look like a rubber duck from what Cawley has said about design specifics.

Actually, is it possible that the redesign is because of a ruptured timeline, the result of the meddling by the Romulans, and that the Enterprise we see for the majority of the film is a different ship than the one that ultimately comes through when the timeline is restored?

i had a thought along similar lines. Could it be that whatever meddling the romulans do will not be completely reversed and thus realign the entire timeline itself so that the trek we saw in the 60's era is actually going to become the alternate timeline permanently.

actually i thought they had already intimated this a bit from the voyager two parter where they go back in time to earth...

Actually, I too have a couple friends in the know and they showed me a concept model just like the one you speak of. I even managed to snap a photo:

Or you can just accept that it's 2007 not 1966 and recreating the past in minute detail isn't going to make Paramount's $150M back.

exactly the point i've been making. A movie, particularly one that wants to take the oft-cited but seldom attained vision of a "new perspective" needs to make something new and visually interesting. people aren't going to pay $10 each to see something that looks like an episode of TOS reshot in High definition.

I had a private conversation with a Friend, who happens to have worked on the project. I have betrayed nothing. I think this statement sums up my feelings quite nicely....

"Knowing Mr Cawleys affection for the original series, It probably just doesnt look exactly as it did in the 60's."

So, I'm a little unclear. Has he actually seen the ship or hasn't he? In some posts he suggests that he actually walked into a studio and saw the design/mockup/cgi etc. of the ship. But in this post it sounds like a "friend" who has worked in some capacity on Trek XI who described it to him.

That makes a huge difference, IMO. If James could clear this up, that would be a big help.

at this point the rumours are flying faster than the Enterprise herself.

This is actually good for Abrams to read and find out what the consensus is on the ship and what the fans like.

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

If I was JJ Abrams I'd stay a couple of lightyears away from this thread.

Particularly this thread.

It's been just rumors built upon rumors.

You know, the one concrete thing we've had in the past 48 hours are really satisfying pics of Quinto as Spock. I'll stick with that. :)

Hmm people seem to be taking "Contemporary Trek" to mean Next Generation in style - but you know what makes me doubt that?

In my mind, that means glowing red domes and neon blue strips on the nacelles -- something I personally abhor in the "old Trek" NX-01, but don't mind in the "higher tech Trek" of the TNG generation. Since there was no such glowy bit in TOS, any addition of it would just seem.... wrong.

Tony

Welp, the TOS nacelles glowed, and the inner sides of them had a strip that was possibly intended to glow as well. The TMP refit also glowed blue on the insides when at warp.

Yeah, if there's one thing this thread is brimming with, it's 'consensus' ;)

I agree with Cogley on this one. Trek fans are a reason Trek is dying. Abrams will be viewed as the man who breathed new life into the franchise on it's deathbed.

The traditional fans will kick and scream at the reboot, but the mainstream masses will love it.

Well frankly if I was Abrams I'd stay away anything resembling the idea or phrase "Well fans want...."

Worry about making a good sci-fi movie first, a great Trek movie second, and don't worry about the fans. Cause no matter what he does, 1/2 the fanbase is going to crucify him, the other 1/2 is going to sing his praises, so why even bother to cater to them? Just worry about making a kick-ass movie.

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

As a fan of the original design, and being particular to things "making sense", continuity-wise, I am bracing myself to be dissapointed.

But, in the grand scheme of things, it's not THAT big a deal. It's just entertainment. I can still enjoy "old" trek. It's not going anywhere. And I'm looking forward to seeing the 1701 in all her original glory on the big screen this thursday!!!! :D

As long as the spout rotates and we can add some wings to the handle, I think we can finally reach consensus on this design.

Seconded. Some people really don't get how this works.

all the more reason why it would be a mistake to try to use a 60's era ship in the movie - general audiences would hardly find it believable.

I'm going to have to disagree there. TOS Enterprise would look great on the big screen with the large prodcution values they'll have on the movie. If done well, people will believe just about anything.
