Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

I haven't seen it, nor I am likely too until someone actually leaks it onto the net or they show it in a trailer, but I really expect it to look like the TOS Enterprise with a level of detail similar to that of the refit in ST:TMP. That's all the ship really needs. I cannot see something like the Ralph McQuarrie Star Destroyer version of the Enterprise making it to the big screen. There is nothing in Abrham's real statements about the film to indicate anything else.

The ship is as iconic a character as any of the actors, and the spy shots of nuSpock certainly look faithful to the original, right down to adding Nimoy's distinctive earlobes, as another poster mentioned.

I'm curious to see the pre-refit CGI Enterprise in The Cage tonight. That might give us some tiny shred of an idea of where the next film is going to some small degree.

I receive No funding from TPTB for New Voyages. No one trusted me to not say anything, I had a private conversation with a Friend, who happens to have worked on the project. I have betrayed nothing. I think this statement sums up my feelings quite nicely....

"Knowing Mr Cawleys affection for the original series, It probably just doesnt look exactly as it did in the 60's."

And just because I do not prefer what I saw, does not mean that many of you won't like it! I do want this film to succeed. In fact I am an ardent supporter of ALL THINGS TREK, including ALL my Fellow fan filmmakers. I believe that there is room in this Trek universe for all of us.

That's cool. I just hate it when companies show stuff to people thinking they have their trust, then they go to Aint It Cool news. I take back what I said! :bolian:

Is this what it came to when a hack doing a very bad job of acting like William Shartner commenting on the real Star Trek materials? Go back to your parent's basement you loser.

hlbimages, I realize you are new, but flaming is not allowed on this board. Calling someone a 'loser' and telling them to 'go back to their parents basement' is flaming, and so I'll have to warn you.

Please go read the board rules on this subject before posting again on TrekBBS.

Should you have any questions about this warning, please contact me via PM.

Thanks.

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

Is there anything specific about what the redesign involves? I keep seeing people talking about "wings" but none of the quotes from James mention anything so specific.

That's the impression I got, but the OP made it sound like you hated it (plus the wing thing....).

I love what you're doing with NV, BTW!

He is probably in his closet in the fetal position going... the FLAPPING and the SPINNING... the HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, FLAPPING, SPINNING New Enterprise!

*or so insider sources tell me... or are they voices in my head...*

*you! there! with the nets! stay AWAY!*
Now, now, now, that's not necessary.

He's more than entitled to his own opinion. He's put both his money and his sweat into recreating TOS. He's earned the right to say that Star Trek should look like Roddenberry's original creation.

How so?

Is he working for Paramount?

Is he on the production staff for this movie?

Is he employed in any decision-making capacity or even any capacity at all for star trek XI?

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

I do wonder what level of redesign "radical" is myself. I remember hearing that said about the TMP re-fit too, and yet it has become as much the Enterprise to me as the original TV version. I know one cannot really be a refit of the other, but I have no problem imagining it that way.

Here is Cawleys comments over at trekweb.com. When you read the article notice in it he uses the words RADICALLY CHANGED about the ship. I believe him.

again not bad news at all his words ,,I don't like it. It is supposed to be NCC-1701, no bloody A,B,C,D or E! and it sure does not look like the 1701 I grew up with!" he said,, point out he was expected model to be 100% faithful to the old Enterprise. That is unrealistic expectation for a multi-million dollar film.

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

I am in agreement with Polaris. The number one thing everyone is getting in a tizzy over is the addition of wings. Apart from Custer saying it has wings, there has been no other cited indication of that.

Anyone remember early on when it was established by the folks working on XI that there would be a few redesigns, but it would stay pretty loyal to the original design?

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

/\Exactly! How do we know this Enterprise won't become the standard design. The TMP refit proved that a major change could work. Also, how big were the wings? Did they just extend the ones on the nacells, or does it look like an Enterprise with Space Shuttle wings? I'll laugh if it was only a few people notice the changes.

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

A new Kirk, a new Spock, a new Enterprise. I am more interested in acting than accuracy for the former, and eye-candy than canon for the latter. This doesn't surprise me, but I'm not passing judgement until I've seen the ship. :)

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

As I've told you guys, it's a reboot and when you see the teaser you'll be humbled.

Exactly. The one thing this place has taught me is that Star Trek fans don't agree on anything...

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

I'm a life-long Trek fan. I'm in my thirties and I've been watching Trek since I was a toddler, and I'm most fond of TOS and its crew.

Oddly, I have little problem with this "reimagining". TOS itself in film and TV is long since over. Some of the actors are dead. To revisit it necessitates a recasting.

The sets for the show were severely limited by budget and a 60s design ethic, although I think they made the most of it. No problem making sets more timeless and better built.

But there are a few things that were really well done. Wah Chang's desgins for things like the tricorders and phasers. Most of all, the main ship designs were fantastic. The Klingon and Romulan ships were all great designs, but somewhat limited by budget and modelling constraints. The 1701, on the other hand, was masterful. A timeless sci-fi design, and a model with many great details that never showed up on-screen. There's a lot of room left to play with it internally without ever touching the exterior design cues. Of all the things they could screw with, the one thing they needn't is the Enterprise. Univerally recognized, it says Star Trek far more than Spock's ears. I have faith that they can design something good to replace the original ship, but I'm disappointed they felt a need to.

Um, I'm going to have to disagree with that statement. Real Trek fans can...

Oh... Damn! Damn! Damn! :brickwall:

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

Thanks James from chiming in, appreciate your comments.

You know it is possible that the Enterprise of TOS era was a refit of a different design?? No one said that April's Enterprise resembled Kirk/Pike design.

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

Is it more or less radicly changed than the Gabe Koerner version? Does Crawley also consider the Gabe Koerner version to be a 'radicly changed' version of the original?

Most people who are not opposed to altering the design like the GK version, so I would be satisfied with it.

I also interpret 'vectoring nacelles' to be similar to the nacelles on Voyager, if that statement is true of course.

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

Does anyone besides me think that, if this thing is going to flying around an atmosphere, wings sort of make sense?

Re: James Cawley (New Voyages) has seen the Ship (Its Aweful

Why do i see the IKS Protector from Galaxy Quest as the new Enterprise...? 8[
