James Bond franchise--the return of SPECTRE and Blofeld?

It would be a new Blofeld for sure--and there is only one actor I want for that role--Frank Langella. If you have ever watched him as Boris Balkan in The Ninth Gate, you will know why.

Too old, it should be Vin Diesel. Why?

Because he's bald, big, and looks like the Blofeld of the novels. Have him be American this time around, with a different story of how he set up SPECTRE.

Some people will hate that idea but I don't mind it, as I'm in the minority that prefers Telly Savalas to Donald Pleasance or Charles Grey as Blofeld (they couldn't replicate the Pleasance take now, Dr Evil has ruined that for them). I think Vin is under-rated as an actor and it would be interesting to see him as a bad guy. Also interesting to see him opposite Bond, seeing as his own xXx was very much riffing on 007 and mocking that franchise as passé.

However, I'm pretty sure that somebody in Spectre is playing Blofeld. Obviously, the money has to be on Waltz and that they're going down the Ducard/Ras Al Ghul or John Harrison/Khan deception route. Mind you, I've even heard speculation that one of the leading ladies will be playing a female Blofeld!

Yeah, I liked the Savalas version as well. It's worth noting I think, that he's probably the Blofeld who we see the least with the cat I think (counting the 'unseen' Blofelds in the other films as well)-and despite the baldness (pretty sure novel Blofeld had hair), he's the truest to the novels I think, as noted above.

I like how Savalas underplays the role nicely. There's no hamming it up (like Grey) and he doesn't have Pleasance's scar and all the rest to rely on (I do like Pleasance's version too, I should say). He's almost ahead of his time in his fairly natural approach to the part - he'd fit in nicely in a modern 007 movie.

I don't see Vin Diesel playing any character who has to sit still as much as Blofeld does. :p

If that were true it certainly wouldn't be unheard of. One of the John Gardner novels had a female Blofeld (his daughter, actually) turn out to be the main villain.

I like Savalas, but I think his Blofeld is almost too ordinary. I do like how they've dispensed with the scar, and the fact that he doesn't seem that enamored of his cat

I'd agree that Grey does ham it up somewhat!

Someone has pointed out that, apparently, Bellucci's character's name is Italian for volcano :p

That actually could be interesting...maybe Waltz is one of the henchmen and Belluci will be revealed as the main baddy?

Then again, they've already done that in The World Is Not Enough. However Skyfall certainly had some similarities to that movie too (The whole thing with the villain having some connection to M, attacking the MI6 building and having to set up HQ at another location, Bond injured in part of the film etc.) and the Bond films-even the new more 'realistic' ones-have hardly had original plots over the years. Spy Who Loved Me, for instance, has often been criticized as being an updated "You Only Live Twice", and then there's Moonraker of course which pretty much was Spy Who Loved Me but in space and with more goofiness (Funny thing is all those films had the same director). View To A Kill also aped a lot of Goldfinger.

The way I see Blofeld, he'd be taking part in things, and even challenging Bond physically (check out the fight in the novel You Only Live Twice to see Blofeld almost getting the better of Bond.)

Well Skyfall riffed on a lot of Bond films (I suspect all of them in some shape or form) given it was the 50th. I was watching it again the other day and one of these days I will keep a clipboard with me and note them all down! For example the signiture gun is The Living Daylights, the radio very Goldfinger, and finding an assassin by the bullets he uses is obviously from The Man With the Golden Gun :) There are a whole host more and probably ones I haven't picked up on yet.

In the opening credit sequence Craig's Bond is shown firing his gun in an identical way that Connery often fired. Just to add to your list of references to past films :)

 Volcano comes from the name Vulcano, which is Italian. Belucci's character is named Lucia Sciarra.

Sciarra Name Meaningnickname for a quarrelsome or litigious person, from Sicilian, Calabrian sciarra ‘quarrel’, ‘dispute’, ‘lawsuit’.habitational name from Sciarra in Palermo province, Sicily, named with a word denoting a volcanic area.

It is fairly tenuous, but it is worth adding that Saint Lucia had her eyes gouged out...something like that's bound to leave some scarring ;)

So this is how they're shooting the vehicle/driving portions of SPECTRE.
