I don't like where this thread is going. :( To brighten up the Ezri talk on this page, I'd just like to state that I'm watching season 7 for the first time and I consistently find her to be the best part of every episode (which is similar to how I felt about Jadzia, especially in the early seasons). I find watching what she says or does in reaction to the situations in the episodes makes them a lot more interesting, which again is something I felt about Jadzia, so it's safe to say that I feel the transition from one Dax to another on the show has been handled about as well as it possibly could be.
I just watched S6-7 for the first a few months ago also. I have to agree. The Ezri character is, in many ways an "antidote" to the heavy plots culminating in S6. She is a breathe of fresh air, the new perspective, doesn't know the crew initially, etc. So she ends up bringing a lot of comic elements, which gives opportunities to the other characters as well, obviously. I won't drop any spoilers, but the dynamic with Ezri-Worf is a lot of fun also, particularly later...
I have a hard time with the poll, though. Jadzia or Ezri what? What is the question? Which one I find cuter? That's Ezri. Which is a better character? Neither. Which is better acted? Neither. Better written? I might have to say Ezri. Which one had more quality episodes? Jadzia. Which would win in a fight? :rommie: I think that would be Jadzia also.
I guess I'll vote Jadzia, since that character is the one I most associate with DS9. She's the "old man". Ultimately her personal story arcs became rich and interesting, and through her character we covered a lot of strange new territory.
Ezri is probably my favorite short-term Star Trek character though. Looking at this thread, it seems she is a bit like Dr. Pulaski in that respect. A few people dislike them, but they are both generally very popular characters as years have gone by.

Why must you make me choose! :cardie:

That said, this...
...I really like the direction they've taken Ezri in TrekLit, and I wish we could've seen more of her development over a couple of seasons, rather than trying to fit her in at the end when there wasn't really a lot of time to be introducing a new character.

I agree with and it ultimately decided my vote. Part of Jadzia's problem is one that I've seen other people identify on here... we got to know Curzon Dax through Jadzia just as well as we got to know Jadzia (before or after Joining).

Jadzia was much more interesting for me. She felt right as Dax. I could really see her building on the prior hosts interest and experiences.

I did like Ezri. Both were interesting, in different ways. I do wish we'd had more time to see her dealing with conjoining though. She was so totally different from both of Dax's prior hosts.

I like Ezri much more than Jadzia, I find Ezri much cuter than Jadzia and the one trait of Jadzia that really irritated me was that she seemed to act with all the lives she's lived she's better than she actually is.

Ezri is my preferred Dax, but I never liked the character too much anyway. The one thing that annoys me about Ezri is the nervous snigger she did at the end of most sentences.

I don't know whether Nicole De Boer was just a poorish actress or whether this was something she did intentionally for the character, but it is definitely annoying.

I know somebody who does that for real.

Nothing against Ezri (and I'm afraid the episodes I still need to catch up are a chunk of her era, so I don't know her too well), but Jadzia was great, with her free thinking and slight manliness and boldness and courage. She knew what she wanted and took risks for it.

One thought: People say they warmed up to her, or she improved. Didn't she happen to take on Jadzia-like qualities after being just herself at first? :p

Jadzia, by miles. I quite like her actually.

I don't know if it was a brilliant idea to introduce a new character for one season only.

Normally I think I might be of that opinion, but I think this worked because it happened to be Dax. This way we got to see a change of host during the show, and it was really only half a new character anyway (at most).

I get that the general sentiment is that there was too much focus on her in season seven, especially early on, and that is a legitimate point, but overall I think it makes an odd kind of sense that the symbiotic character would be the one regular character who is replaced, since the continuity of character beyond death is one salient quality of this species.

It just struck me that a Trill is like a Time Lord. LOL. That you can have the same character, but a different actor playing him or her, and it's perfectly explainable. That said, I loved both Daxes. I refuse to vote in this poll.

It's interesting in that they're both takes on sort-of immortality, but with a different twist/mechanism. Trill are immortal in memory, and in the effects their preserved personality has on the next host(s). However, each joined Trill is a separate person and explicitly treated as such (unless they're not... *cough*KangKorKoloth*cought*). Time Lords, however, are functionally immortal in that each regeneration is considered the same person, even though the personality may be vastly different (see Five to Six, or Nine to Ten, as examples). Aside from the initial (and not-so-initial) mutual geeking out between Dax and the Doctor, I wonder what they'd make of their respective biologies?

Mmmm.... can you imagine Jadzia traveling with Nine, or Zee with Ten? :D:techman:
Actually, it might make more sense to reverse that - assuming this is replacing Rose. Jadzia and Ten could geek out together... but Ezri and Ten would make a great pair, hmm....
Somebody, somewhere, has to have written a good fanfic about this... right?

Speaking of WHO, Jadzia reminds me of the first Romana, in looks and temperament whil Ezri reminds me of the second Romana in temperament and somewhat in looks/stature. Both characters went from a statuesque lady to a more petite girl accompanied with similar shifts in temperament. Jadzia/Romana I (or Fred, whichever) was serious, gave people shit but occasionally had a good sense of humor and a vulnerability. Ezri/Romana II are both kinda more silly, emotional and chirpy.

They're also basically the same as the Tok'ra in Stargate as they are a symbiote which is passed from person to person & joins with the host / retains knowledge / etc.

I liked Ezri the second time around (lately) watching DS9 in order on DVD.

I like the idea of having Jadzia (or anyone) die because it is somewhat realistic in a major war, since nobody major even gets hurt usually. (I'm picturing a huge battle with ships blown up left and right, and the Defiant comes through fine.)
