"I've nothing to say to you O'Brien, I think you know why"????

I often wonder if the whole defiant-stealing situation could've been prevented by someone, ANYONE actually checking the logs to find out where The Enterprise was posted to at that particular moment and if it was within a shuttle ride of the station.

The series gives the impression that Odo was that kind of fastidious jobsworth that he would've been checking on everyone through the airlock, friend or foe.

Tom Riker probably had all kinds of fake identification and safeguards in place to prove he's the real Will Riker. Like he probably had an inside man on Odo's security force.

That said, at this point it was clear that Starfleet didn't entirely trust Odo. Perhaps fleet deployments were considered the purview of Eddington rather than Odo, or perhaps the Enterprise's location at that point was classified for some reason. In fact, perhaps Starfleet vessel deployments are generally considered classified to all non-Starfleet personnel. I.e. Sisko could have gotten the location with reason, but Odo isn't allowed to just have a working list of all SF vessels at all times.

Ironically, the developing threat of the Maquis could have provoked exactly the kind of classification that would work against Odo in this type of situation.

Bah, it's just as likely that Riker - either Tom or Will - just used a civilian transport to get to DS9. Why would that be considered odd? Must Starfleet officers always fly single-occupant shuttlecraft to get where they want to go?

All we learn is that he claims he was "passing through" on his way to Risa. Which obviously isn't a reference to a beeline from the Enterprise to Risa running through DS9, but a more figurative expression. He's planning on spending a bit of time on DS9 - how long, he doesn't mention and supposedly doesn't know, so he's not traveling on a scheduled service, but is either taking rides on a number of separate services or flying a spacecraft that caters to his personal whims.

Oh, and he also claims he was nearly "shoved out of the airlock" by Crusher, indirectly indicating he didn't arrive on the Enterprise. Had the starship actually parked nearby, there'd have been no need to "nearly" use an airlock!

Speculating on how Tom Riker really arrived is probably the way to tackle the issue. He wouldn't have used a stolen Starfleet shuttle - too complicated and dangerous. He wouldn't have been able to travel aboard a starship - too many people and documents to expose him. Boarding a commercial transport would be the least complicated and most convincing way to do it.

It's not widely known but Riker and O'Brien were lovers for a brief period. It ended badly when Riker caught O'Brien in the sonic shower with Mot. In an act of revenge Riker had O'Brian transferred to the most distant Federation outpost. It's Keiko I feel the most sorry for in all this. :(

I can't blame them. I didn't trust Odo for a while there myself when I first started watching.

From Defiant.
Tom Riker says this to O'Brien, who scuttles off sharpish.. As opposed to asking what the hell.

Is there any basis for Rikers animosity ( as in was there anything that happened between O'Brien and Riker to explain why our outspoken Chief was not confused about all this? )

Miles O'Brien and Will Riker worked together daily throughout Next Gen. Tom Riker knew Miles would soon spot the attempted impersonation from speech style differences and lack of shared experiences eminating from this imitation "old pal".

Welcome to The Trek BBS Roland!

I just wanted to point out that the post you are replying to is 10 years old, and the individual who made that post hasn't been around in almost the same amount of time.

As a rule we ask people not to resurrect a thread if it has been dormant for over a year. If it's a topic that really interests you then you are more than welcome to create your own thread. In fact we encourage it! You can always link back to any relevant material from the old thread if there's something from it you'd like to address.

Having said that, you can't be expected to know all the rules your first day here so I'll leave this open for discussion.

Happy posting. :)

This comes up every few months.

The answer is that nothing at all happened. Tom knew he could be busted by someone likes Miles who knew Will well, so he threw him off guard with the hostility.
It's probably the truth here.

But sometimes I wonder if the problem with O'Brien being demoted from Lieutenant to simply "chief" before being transferred to station Deep Space Nine may have something to to with it.

Some conflict between Will Riker and O'Brien which Tom Riker knew about and used.

I mean, if I would meet an old friend from a previous job and that old friend all of a sudden should come up with such a remark and treat me like s**t, I would have asked what in the world he meant, no matter if he had a higher rank than me.

But old Miles just did seem to resign, as if he thought: "It's all about what happened on the Enterprise that day"

The truth about O'Brien's demotion is coming closer to be revealed...................... :D

I've been around, I've just been keeping a low profile. You guys are a well behaved bunch so I don't need to intervene very often. :)
This must be the first time I've been called "well behaved"!
I'm delighted! :techman:
(I assume I'm among the well-behaving people since I've recently posted in this thread!) ;)

I always thought it was because he left the Enterprise to go to DS9

Wasn't O'Brien's departure long after Tom Riker was gone from the Enterprise?

Who could argue with getting a promotion (in duties if not in rank) from Transporter Operator to Chief of Operations for a huge space station? Sometimes you need to move out in order to move up. A lesson Will Riker might have taken to heart.
