I've never seen most of it...

Ok now I am starting to get the diffrence between what studio execs will like (in terms of budget and their own narrow imaginations) and what the audience would like.

Two pilots.
Where no man has gone before was ok, but the Cage was a masterpeice, and far superiour to WNMHGB.

It's too bad you don't have Netflix in Ireland. I don't own TOS (or any of Star Trek) on DVD either, but if I feel like ordering up a DVD, I just add it to my queue and get it for the equivalent of $1.50.

But looks like you've found a way. Make sure to watch:

Amok Time
Space Seed
A Taste of Armegeddon
Devil in the Dark
The Doomsday Machine

I just watched the Conscience of the King.
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/The_Conscience_of_the_King_%28episode%29

Before I started watching this series for the first time (as far as 95% of the eps were concerned) I thought I'd find it lacklustre because of the lack of modern effects and low budgets....Im now starting to realize....THEY DIDN'T NEED THEM!
They could do weird aliens when required like in the man trap and the cage but some of the stories are so well done I can't beleive I coinciously deprived myself of this for so long.
I thought I'd be constatntly comparing it to TNG, VOY, DS9 etc but I find that if you look at it in it's origional context, and the time it was made, it's pretty amazing.
I'm also starting to realze the influence it had on other shows, why Kenny in South Park is always dressed in red (and is always killed) and where the name of Kodos came from in the simpsons.

I had a bit of suspence in this episode because I realy liked O'Reiley, from this and the other ep, and thought he was kinda cute too and din't want Kirk or security to have to shoot him dead to stop him killing Kodos I'm glad he survived but according to memory alpha we don't see him again :(

Watched the Gallelo Seven, all my exam study breaks are now consisting of escapism to TOS.

A few things.

1. What the hell is a high commissioner?
2. Why was the shuttle so spartan in terms of controls/computers
3. Is this the cursed shuttle that always gets into trouble? the name I mean?
4. I can't remember his name, the black officer in the blue uniform...but wouldn't starfleet officers be trained to be more disciplined under stressful situations? I can understand a bit of frustration with Spocks rigid logic but he really went over the line.

Phoenix:

I'll take a stab at your questions.

1. Who the hell knows? The title seems to indicate a high-ranking official from the Federation. He was a pain, wasn't he?
2. Simple answer: Budget!
3. I don't think so. Why do you ask?
4. Boma was probably less experienced than the other officers. As a blue-shirt, he probably was more of a lab-coat type. Just my guess.

BTW, have you tried watching TOS online on the CBS site? Here is the URL: http://www.cbs.com/classics/star_trek/video/video.php?cid=619493214&cc=0

Don't know if you'll be able to view it in Ireland, but less us know, eh?

Can't watch it here, had to buy the DVD box sets cheap on ebay/amazon and with the weak $ to the € it's very cheap.

The box sets also look pretty cool compared to all the slimline stuff for the other series, I remember DS9 used to have mad shaped boxsets too but they were discontinued here, TNG still has theirs but they are dwindling.

Watching Arena next, it's one of the tiny number of TOS I've seen before but I saw it so long ago I remember almost none of it.

I just remember on an ST documentary I think it was on the 25th anneversiry them referring to a cursed shuttle that always got them into trouble and I think it was the Gallelo.

...for several reasons

1. The boxsets are €80 each and I simply cant afford to pay that/nor would ANY ST series be worth it.
2. They are NEVER...EVER shown on TV here anymore.
3. I grew up with TNG and DS9
4. They are the only Star Trek series that you can't watch online, anywhere, except the CBS website, which non-Americans are barred from.

I have seen some of the first season, and a handful of others, and with the exception of Trouble with Tribbles, Bound and The G on the Edge of Forever I was horrably bored by it.
I think I've been spoiled by the bigger budgets and better effects of TNG and the rest and will never be able to fully appriciate it....if I ever get to see the thing that is.

TOS has many worthy stories, and you are right, it doesn't strictly need new imagery to make it a great show, however, you'll do yourself a disservice if you don't watch TOS in its remastered form. The ultimate way of course, would be to get it on blu-ray (or sea 1 on hd dvd), and watch it on an HDTV because THAT's what the remastering was intended for. You'll see more detail, clarity and better color than ever before. But you' also see scenes like this:

Believe it or not, the DVD capture:

And from remastered in HD.

I disagree here. While the Cage is no doubt, an awesome pilot, WNMHGB includes some of the very best acting and character dynamics of the whole series, right in the 2nd PILOT! Usually it takes shows awhile to get this dynamic. The Cage cast just never would have worked in a series, and it shows in the stiff acting. WNMHGB also has a very good message and interesting back story. The only person we learn anything about in the Cage is Pike.

OK, got you on the cursed shuttle thing. First I ever heard of this!

You should enjoy Arena. It's based on an earlier SF short story of the same name, written by Frederic Brown, which has a different ending. If you ever get a chance to read it, you should. Good story from the golden age of SF.

Loved Arena!

Had already seen tomorrow is yesterday and city on the edge of forever, both great.

The return of the Archons seemd to have to have a message against religious fanatics.

A Taste of Armageddon had an interesting story.

Space Seed is next.

I've VERY surprised there hasn't been one yet I dind't like.

Reading about the SERIES and its development I now understand why they had so many non-exotic or ouright human looking aliens, they were being very limited with the budget, I always thought it could not cost THAT much but evidently it does.

Return of the Archons made me wonder..did the prime directive exist yet?

The planet basically said "go away" and the amassador was very "NO! WE WILL ENGAGE THEM IN DIPLOMACY EVEN IF WE HAVE TO KILL THEM!!"
