I've Created A New Niner!

I've never 'created' a new fan of DS9 before. So I take whatever Trek book I'm reading to read on breaks at work. And I get the questions I'm sure you all know them, from the people who don't know the shows but generally, or confuse it with Star Wars, which happens more often than I'd thought possible. Well I have a work friend that didn't know I was a Trek fan, and he explained how he loves The Original Series but thinks that the new shows are to 'sterilized'. He asked which was my favorite show, DS9, he had the impression that DS9 was TNG on a space station and that Voyager was TNG 70,000 light-years away.

To make this long story a tad shorter, I convinced him to watch the first season. He liked it. He hates the Bajorans, loves the Cardies, and thought the acting could have been better. Asked for the second season, liked it even more, he watches the third season, he's really getting into the show he's asking me things about the Dominion and I stay tight lipped on everything.

My friend watches "Way of the Warrior," says he thinks it might be the best episode he's every seen. He gets to the end of season four and is mad that the Founders of made Odo a solid.

He has just started season five, I can't wait for the war to start in earnest for his reactions.

It's almost like see it for the first time though someone else.

Just thought I'd share.

I don't know if my friend will become a Niner, but I have been loaning him the seasons in order, and I think he's enjoying it and gaining greater respect for the show.

Congrats on converting him! But how could he love the spoonheads?

Everyone loves the Cardassians. They're the true heroes of DS9.

After Quark. ;)

I had a similar experience with a friend. In his case it was TNG he was a fan of, but non the less, he insisted DS9 just "wasn't the same" and always teased me about how much a preached its greatness. Then, a while back, I went home for a week and stayed with him for a few days. By coincidence "Moonlight" was on (late at night on SPIKE) and instead of going to bed he stayed up and watched it. After it was over, he gave it a Holy Effenhiemer and begged me for the DVDs.

Of course, I had to mail them to him with no guarantee I was every going to see them again.

Just like the show itself, even its fans take brave risks to get great results!

Well props to you for creating a new fan...strange that he should like season 1 though hummmmmm...

Cool!

I think this just goes to show that there's probably a lot of people out there who've never really seen DS9 and who lump it together with all the other Trek shows. It's understandable but a real shame.

agreed!

this reminds me of when Marc Alaimo (Dukat) used to say that he was the real hero of DS9. I think he even pissed Behr off at some point, hence the fall of Dukat. ;)

congrats to the OP on propagating the species, btw!

Your friend is an idiot. If he wasn't, he would've said, "What the hell is this crap? This isn't Star Trek! What the hell are you trying to push on me here?!"

Great job man! DS9's a tough show to get people into because of the huge arcs involved and the first season (the logical place to start) is the weakest the show has to offer. The thing with DS9 is you can't sell it to people with one episode, like with my ex, she would sit and watch the two DS9 episodes with me just to be there on the couch. Took her months but she went from sitting there reading a magazine, to the magazine sitting on the floor, to her asking questions, and now finally she's a fan. Takes a couple episodes.

Awesome! Spread the gospel!
My sister used to watch some Trek episodes with me. But I am yet to convert her. She enjoyed Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas with me though.

Excellent job.

And clearly a display of good taste on your friend's part.

You ought to get him in here to post! :D

Okay...I think we can dispense with the trolling now...

Next time, it'll be a warning.

Wow, such hostility. No need for such blatent evidence of the green-eyed monster though. It always amazes me when fans of the other shows are so intimidated by DS9 that they can't help but let their inferiority complex get the better of them.

Plissken, the latest victim of 'little man' syndrome.

What the hell are you talking about? So I'm not allowed to say what I think? Is that what you're telling me?

See, I'm really... I'm trying to care... almost there... almost caring... nope, not happening.

Now that is some kind of delusion you got going on there, junior. So you're telling me that everyone who is hostile to something actually is jealous of that something? That's what you're telling me? This is your genius?
