I've come to really Appreciate Enterprise

I never really enjoyed Bakula's portrayal of Archer. To me, he just didn't suit the role, and he came off as a cardboard cutout that barked too much. -More of a tyrant rather than a Captain. Trip and Phlox were really the high points of the show.

They way I see it he was a never captain material, he got the CO post through a PR exercise (being the son of the guy who designed the engine). I do feel though, by the time the xindi thread was eliminated he was starting to show some captains chops.

Actually, I believe Seasons 3 and 4 don't favor the minor characters much. But you're right in that the screen time of these minor characters is probably comparable to TOS.

I have to disagree with that. They may not be feature players, but they get more used than the minor cast did in TOS (the TOS films are a different matter). E.g. Hoshi gets more to say than "Hailing frequencies open" every other episode! They didn't get many of their own "very special episodes" in the later seasons, admittedly, but then those episodes tend to suck anyway.

:techman:
I'm not progressing very fast only rewatch of TOS. It's not as interesting to me as it was when I was 12. You are right about Uhura, as she didn't have much to do. I really actually liked Hoshi. She was extremely intelligent - a gifted linguist. She didn't have a universal translator to rely on initially...she WAS the UT. And even though she was very nervous/anxious about being in space , especially the first season, she really came into her own by the time she was taken by the Xindi.

I'll take your word for it as I haven't watched the original series through in at least 20 years, to be honest. That kind of backs what Shatner has said about the little tiff he's been having with Takei. He said he honestly doesn't know why there was so much bad blood in the beginning as he honestly doesn't remember having shared the set with him much during the series' run. He said Takie's parts were so infrequent that there were many times when he wasn't on the set that often. The only cast member on Enterprise who's parts seemed to decrease dramatically in the later seasons was that of Anthony Montgomery. By the fourth season he was seem less air time than Phlox' tongue scraper.

I finished watching ENT season 3 over the weekend, and both Malcolm and Hoshi get their own little arcs over the last three episodes. Hoshi gets kidnapped by Reptilians, who do something to her brain to make her cooperative; Malcolm feels bad about a MACO dying under his command, then has to cope with Hayes dying. Malcolm had a great line, something like, "Maybe that's the problem; maybe we're getting a little too comfortable with losing people."

I liked when Malcolm showed his emotion, especially at the death of Hawkins. I was fortunate not to lose anyone under my command while I served in the military, but I know officers that did lose people under their command, and it was truly devastating. It's not like you can process it in a day (like it seemed Janeway did so often). Archer had a reaction to the deaths when he returned to Enterprise after the battle of Azati Prime. And as I recall, the crew had a memorial service. And Archer mentioned the lost crewmembers when he returned home.

To me, it was a more real reaction to battle deaths (as real as t.v can make it), as opposed to , say, the death of Red Shirt #5

Thanks for your response, Willow. There was another relevant moment in the episode Home, when Archer is questioning the whole exploration mission. His friend Erika disagrees, and he answers, "Well, maybe you'll feel differently after you've delivered a few dozen eulogies." I felt that was a very strong line. I'm lucky that kind of thing is outside my experience.

I've not always been so fortunate. 23 years in the military and I saw death a number of times. I don't think you can ever get too comfortable with it, but you can develop coping mechanisms to deal with. I was able to block it out most of the time, but that method can come back to bite you in the arse.

Thank you for your service, IrishNero And I'm sorry you had to witness so much tragedy:(

One of the reasons I liked that episode was because of Archer. Here was the guy who went out, kind of with rose colored glasses, ready to make alien friends...and he comes home battle-hardened. The PTSD Archer was vdry reminiscent of my little brother when he returned home from one of his tours, having lost several friends when their helicopter was shot down - made all the more worse for him because he was supposed to be on that helicopter if not for a last-minute crew change.
