Its Only a Paper Moon - one of DS9's best, and almost didn't get made

Re: Its Only a Paper Moon - one of DS9's best, and almost didn't get m

I liked Vic's character. I just hated his music. And I find it bizarre that the entire crew love his music. I don't know many people into his music enough to sit all night through it. The crew are all individuals and should have different tastes.

I think Only a Paper Moon was a good use of his character for once. His character had far too much air time for my liking. He was the equivalent of Guinan- but we had quark for that!

I have to say that by the stage of DS9 they were at when "It's Only A Paper Moon" aired, there was so much life in the support characters that they could well have been mains anyway - Vic Fontaine was accepted by the audience right away in many cases (I've not heard a Niner slag him off yet... but I'm sure I will if anyone here disagrees!), and Nog had indirectly been part of the family since the pilot.
This. As another poster pointed out upthread, I never missed the principle cast in this. Seeing that we'd watch Nog grow up over the past seven years, it works perfectly. O'Brien losing his leg wouldn't have had as much of an emotional impact since the man's gone through one crazy shit thing behind the other in at least two episode a season.

And since it's worth a mention, I think the reason Vic didn't grate on many viewers' nerves is because 1) DS9 didn't burn through Holosuite plots like a gambling addict burns through his kids' college savings and 2) He was aware of who and what he was and was fine with it. TPTB could have easily made him another Doctor or Data, and I'm glad they didn't.
