It's official. The Enterprise is built in...(spoilers)

Iowa.

TrekMovie: On the Enterprise being built in Iowa — It is amazing that in January after the first trailer, where the ship was being built was the hottest topic. It seem after the second trailer, it still is the hottest topic. Are you surprised this is such a big deal to fans?

Roberto Orci: No, not at all.
From the minute we pulled that fan photo of the Enterprise being built in a ship yard - we showed that to JJ as a way to get him excited and to show him how grounded Star Trek could be, literally [laughs].
And he really locked onto that image. We showed with the caveat that if we went down that road, there would be some strong fan reaction, but that we thought we could justify it, but we knew if from second one.

TrekMovie: And do you have any internal reasoning why the ship is being built in Riverside Iowa instead of San Francisco.

Roberto Orci: Yes.

There also seems to be another tidbit alluded to in the interview. Orci confirmed that the prequel comic takes place after Nemesis, and the first cover pictures what looks to be Data.

Did they find a way to resurrect Data!? :) (ecstatic happy dance)

Could be B4 or some pre-Nemesis flashback with Data...

I'm hoping it's neither B4 nor Data.

I'm hoping it's neither.

Yes, I wouldn't mind seeing Data alive and well, myself.

Me too, but reboot or not, the events of Nemesis really should be alluded to in some minimal way.

Just thought of how they can resolve the Iowa/San Francisco build issue.

Could be that the Starfleet San Francisco Yards has various facilities around the world they operate - Such as NASA has facilities around the country. I could see it being way too congested trying to build multiple ships simultaneously in one location.

Even if this is their intention, I doubt it will be mentioned on screen (though maybe in the novelization).

I'm banking on it's either B4 or Data. Since there is a picture of one of them on the cover.

*In my lonley little though bubble: Could be if there is a curropted time line, somehow that resulted in Data not being killed. Spock has to correct the past, that again will/may result in Data's death - I.E. Yesterday's Enterprise (Tasha Yar "I shouldn't even be here"). Orci did mention that this episode was a big influence on the movie.

Pardon me. I misread what I was replying to; my intent was to say that I was hoping that it was neither Data nor B4 who would feature in the post-NEM sections of the comic. Resurrection is cheap and overused.

So the Enterprise is actually built in Iowa interesting.

I just felt a disturbance in the Force like a bunch of fanactic fanboys crying not cannon in terror. That or its just heartburn from that burger I had last night.

That seems a totally unnecessary change to me. I don't mind it being built on the ground, since the original ship's plaque said San Francisco, Calif. Which means it was built in Califoria, and not orbital docks named after the city.

But why bother moving it? In the future an Iowa to SF trip would take about 5 seconds, it's not like there's a big distance barrier like today.

I think it's a consequence of the time-travel and Iowa's special relationship with linear time...

It's this place called Des Moines. It's like, lost in time, see? Everybody looks like you do. Fashion is two years behind, Technology is two years behind, fads, are two years behind, just like you.

The 5 seconds trip between locations almost could be an argument for the Iowa construction site. Or even a 30 minute travel time.

Or maybe following WWIII the imperialist state of California conquered Iowa and they never gave it back!
