It's 11:59...

We complain Voyager didn't get enough character development. This ep. is all it's about and we still don't like it.

Well Shran and I didn't say "it isn't Trek", we said "it doesn't feel like Trek", to us. I totally understand what he means. If other people like it because it's a change of pace for them, then fine. Personally I don't care much for slow moving dramas in general, so the episode isn't a favorite of mine.

You also said that Trek is about exploring the human condition, and certainly that's true to a point. Personally, I like Trek mostly for the exploring the human and alien condition while exploring space part of it, so an episode about an ancient relative of Janeway's back on earth wasn't really my cup of tea. Although as I said, I am able to somewhat appreciate it to an extent, despite the fact that I find it quite boring overall.
I respect your opinion.

..but while you say part of Trek is exploring space, DS9 is the top fan favorite and they didn't explore space at all.

They didn't explore at the extent of any of the other series, but they were the only ones exploring the Gamma Quadrant and they had a few Alpha Quadrant explorations.... like "One Little Ship" where they were studying a spacial anomaly that could help with trans warp travel..... though the Dominion kinds screwed that up.

Gamma Quadrant, anyone? ;)

Besides, they're out in space doing "space stuff" most of the time. Voyager is too most of the time, but not in 11:59. That's not to say that doing "space stuff" is all that I like, as It's Only a Paper Moon is a favorite of mine.

I'm on the verge of arguing myself into a corner here lol. All I'm saying is that while I thought it was pretty well written and everything, I just thought 11:59 was pretty boring.

I never liked 11:59. It didn't feel like Star Trek in any way to me.
They did way too many cliche episodes with repetitive stories - a crewman in danger, anomaly, aliens of the week and their society strangely similar to some Earth society of the past, time travel, outsider in the crew learns to be human, etc. (if that's what is meant by "feels like Star Trek"). With 20 episodes a year, they could have spared an occasional one on doing something a bit different.

I hate this episode! DS9 did episodes like this = irrelevant!
I don't get this criticism. Relevant to what? Overall story arc? How many episodes of VOY were "relevant"? They pretty much came home on a Deus ex machina in the finale and very little in that episode had had any previous build-up, by that logic you could have skipped most of the episodes after the pilot.

in two seasons before the "Jem Hadar", how much of GQ did we see?

I really enjoyed the Bajoran political and religious intrigue that led up to all of that. That still involved an alien planet and an alien civilization. Word.

Since you asked:

Season 1:
"Captive Pursuit" (Though the Gamma Quadrant came to the station, rather them going to the GQ)

"Move Along Home" (Same as above)

"Vortex"

"Battle Lines"

"Dramatis Personae" (Gamma Quadrant elements once again come to DS9)

Season 2:
"Rules of Acquisition"

"Sanctuary"

"The Alternate"

"Paradise"

"Shadowplay"

"Playing God"

"The Jem'Hadar" (First encounter with the Dominion)

And that's about it before the Dominion start to take off, but even then they continued to explore the Gamma Quadrant and encounter GQ related things that arrived on the Station, etc. before the war breaks out.

Elements of things from to Gamma Quad. coming to us doesn't count because that's not actually exporing "space", which is what the original comment addresses. If things coming to us from the GQ counted, then every ep. with the Dominion counts too. What most of those are examples are is GQ aliens exploring OUR space.

11:59 is one of my favorite Voyager episodes, not really for the episode itself, but for what it reminds me of when I watch it. I remember the fear people faced for the new Millennium, and the various stories that were told going into the new year. This episode I think captured that spirit very well and as a story in Voyager, I just really liked it.

It also mimics how your local Mom & Pop stores are being forced out of business due to bigger corporations like Wal-Mart & Home Depot.

For example by me the downtown area of Hackensack(yes, the one from the Billy Joel song) is now a ghost town due to the expansion of malls(we have 6 within a 2 mile radius of each other) and the introduction of Target.(As of 5 years ago, there was no such thing as a Target or Wal-Mart in the northern NJ area.)
