Maybe I read something wrong but I though Burnham was supposed to be the Discovery's XO? Has this just not happened yet and when and if it does what will happen to Saru. Has anyone from the show said anything about this?

I think that was the most suspected hypothesis earlier but to be frank I think this is better.

I wasn't originally fond of the idea that trek have a "main character"

but if this is how they gonna play, jesus I'm floored.

She was first officer of the Shenzhou, that might be where people were confused.

Mind you, her being XO was first said when Bryan Fuller was still at the head, things could have changed since then.

I think we are getting there eventually. This is not your 90s television Trek where the status quo is set in the pilot episode and is only changed when someone from the main cast leaves the series.

All they ever stated in the runup to the premire was: "She was the First officer on the U.S.S. Shenzhou and the series would focus around her and her story."

Her character arc is clearly one of redemption. Send a character down to their lowest point and watch them come back to a cathartic climax. But the war is not going much past the first season, according to interviews with the show runners. That's good, because I definitely don't want a seven-year Xindi story. So one does wonder how long that redemption will be in play.

Which only makes me more suspicious that Lorca will one day become Garth of Izar.

Somebody as obviously nuts as Garth (as we saw in "Whom Gods Destroy") was probably not quite right in the head even beforehand.
