Is VOY a good show to segue into after TNG for a newbie like my roommate?

Despite its flaws, I'm happy that VOY never became like NuBSG.
Too much doom and gloom for me.
I quit watching after a few episodes.

The original BSG was actually somewhat better.

I dunno. I really thought NuBSG was a really brilliant and gritty (for sci-fi) drama.

I really admire the way that Ron Moore took the basic elements of the original BSG and made something that was almost totally different and, imo, much much better.

Now, saying that, I really enjoyed the original BSG for what it was, a Star Wars knockoff. I thought it was pretty clever and entertaining and how can anyone not like Dirk Benedict's Starbuck (the Han Solo like character) and Ben Cartwright as Adama?

I was actually thinking of buying the blu ray for the original bsg on Primeday. Either that or Babylon 5.

Don't need them right now, since I've saved up Picard season 3 and SNW seasons 1 to 3, though.

I don't begrudge you that opinion as it's the constant mental gymnastics I do with Trek now... that it isn't TNG, that I like the comfort of my era of Trek. I can see how someone who liked the original BSG may not like the reboot.

But I do feel Voyager could have played elements of it. It was never going to be BSG. But there were elements that could have been used more. "Prime Factors" I think is a great example of this with the crew - both sides - acting against the norm. "Basics" and "Year of Hell" to prove that space is dangerous. Even nasty horrible Janeway of "Night". But Voyager could have had its algae planet episode... just something to make it convey it's hard for the ship to function from its support network.

It is one of my all time favourite shows and it's up there with TNG, DS9, VOY and B5 for me.

I haven't seen the original BSG since I was a kid, but I went into NuBSG having heard some ominous things about later in the series. I'd also tried to watch part of it on a JetBlue flight and ended up dozing off...but I was trying to watch part of it on a JetBlue flight.

While it's definitely dark and oppressive much of the time, I was deeply impressed, and I do wish VOY had shown a bit more of NuBSG's realism, though I agree with Antony that even if I wanted VOY to go full NuBSG (and I don't think anyone wanted that?), it was never going to, and that's a good thing.

That Ron Moore recorded commentaries for pretty much every episode also spoke well to me as a collector, and was a notable contrast with Paramount's stinginess about meaningful extras.
