I agree with those who say it's less cliquey now than it used to be. For a while there with the 'ignored' stuff it definitely was, although I don't think they ever meant to be exclusive - most people just stopped bothering to read that thread and their in-jokes spread elsewhere and started bugging people.
Before that I viewed ElimParra and Emh's weekly report threads as kind of a measure of how well known you were. If you got a generic comment it meant they had no clue who you were.
And I certainly made friends here with whom I communicated off-board via IM, etc. Most of those people aren't very prolific these days.
