Is There Even A REMOTE Chance Of A New Trek Series?

I'll be elated if that's true. Best if its all in one groups hands. Still, 18 months has come and gone, and if the brand now belongs solely to CBS, I'd love to know what they receive from Paramount as a license fee. It best be pretty good, otherwise not exploiting the brand themselves is going to be hard for them to explain to their stockholders.

I agree that it's far better to have a single braintrust managing the brand. Even with the movie's success, the Star Trek franchise is still on shaky ground and IMO it's too soon for spin-off or variations.

But I don't think CBS shareholders necessarily got a raw deal, even if they weren't paid a dime for the movie.

Let's say you owned a "dead" brand like Star Trek. Someone comes along and says "Hey, we'd like to invest $100 Million into your property, turn it into a summer blockbuster and attract a whole new new audience. After which, all rights will return to you and you can profit from this new audience however you would like." Then you look at the alternative, which is frankly a low-budget cable/CW show with sub-ENT ratings, and it looks like a pretty sweet deal.

With CBS owning the overall rights, it's a sure bet it will return to television, the only real question is when.
