I ask, because we're going to the movies tomorrow, but my wife is thinking of taking my four year old to a kids movie.

The thing is...i would LOVE to share the experience with my little girl. I was about 4 when I was first exposed to Star Trek (reruns in Chicago on Channel 9, Tuesday & Thursdays at 7pm). It'd be nice topossibly give my child a similar experience.

From those who have seen it...what do YOU think?

I can't think of anything that is glaringly bad. There is some violence - a guy being speared with a trident, a man being forced to swallow a bug, a Romulan get's stabbed, a person gets blown up, a man gets incinerated - and a sex scene, but nothing overly scarring.

***MILD SPOILERS - NOTHING DIRECT TO THE STORY THOUGH***

* The GD word is used once, but passes so quickly that most probably didn't even notice it.

* In a dorm room scene, Kirk is on top of an Orion girl but they both are wearing clothes. Uhura takes off her shirt and skirt, but she's wearing underclothes. Again, happens so fast most people probably thought nothing of it except the horny teens.

* A crewmember gets sucked out of the ship through a hull breach and hits a phaser cannon. No blood or gore, though.

* A giant monster creature on Delta Vega tries to eat Kirk. It's very ugly looking.

* Nero uses what looks like another version of a CETI eel on Captain Pike.

That's about it.

it is very loud and at times pretty fast paced so she might not be able to keep up with everything.
there are some deaths but nothing gory or lingering.
the most disturbing might be
they put this bug like thing that reminds me of the thing from tng conspiracy into the mouth of pike to gain information that might be disturbing
and there are some monsters chasing kirk on the ice planet,

but there are also things i think she will like such as some of the character interactions, scotty's little alien friend,..

This is a very action oriented, visual effects driven film. There is a lot of violence, and it isn't all that similar to the original Star Trek. I wouldn't recommend it for any child under 10.

It's too scary to see it on the big screen. It's a strong film in many ways. You can't compare the experience of watching a film in the theater to a dvd at home, it has much more impact when you're young.

So I voted no. Show it to her on the dvd, it's coming out soon. Or better yet, start her on some of the series episodes first.

I fshe can be quite in such an action pack film yeah... But there's a lot of action, big bass, flashing images etc...

Sure... as long as your 4 year old is quiet.

Don't like kids ruining your movie, then don't go to a matinee or the early show. And age is not an indicator of being quiet anyway, some so-called adults can ruin a film experience just as easily, or actually worse. If it really bothers you that much and you don't want to take the chance, you could always wait for the DVD and watch it by yourself.

As for taking a four year old... I personally wouldn't with this particular movie. I have three children (11, 7 & 3), and so far only the oldest is going. My 7yo keeps going back and forth over whether she wants to go at all, and I will take her if she decides she wants to go. It's loud and non-stop, with a bit of jumpy monsters and limited violence. I'd suggest seeing the film first and then taking her later if you decide to let her go - but that's mainly so you can enjoy it first without having to worry about keeping your child in their seat, or leaving twice to go and pee, etc. You can always wait to share it with her when it comes out on DVD. It will still be fun :)

That monster (the red one from the trailers) is probably way too loud, grotesque, and big for many pre-schoolers to see at a theater. The movie itself is very loud and jarring, with lots of fist-fighting, explosions, and the like always going on. Rapid-fire pacing and hand-held camera may make it hard to keep up with (and not just for tykes!) and retain a child's interest.

It'll be perfectly fine. Better to indoctrinate your kid in all that is Trek while they are young ;)

If anything, i think this would serve to keep the kids interest more than anything else.

No, even the scenes people have described in this thread as not-too-violent seem pretty strong for a 4 year old. You have to remember that this is the age group that enjoys shows like Barney and Dragon Tales. Not only is the storyline way above their head, the action is extreme for their mentality.

I won't be able to see this movie until Friday, 6 days from now, due to child care issues. Mine are 7 and 8, and I'm sure they wouldn't be scarred for life if I took them with me. ;) But they also aren't fans of Star Trek. :( It would be a waste for both me and other movie-goers to drag them along to a theater and spend half of my energy trying to get them to sit quietly through a movie that doesn't interest them.

I grew up with a lot of loud and jarring movies (I first saw The Terminator when I was that age, my favorite movie was Batman 1989) and the more active they were the more my attention was focused.

If you're willing to keep an open mind, I think you're going to love the movie.

Indeed, I grew up with Terminator 2, Batman Returns, and yes, Star Trek and I enjoyed them all. It was about good guys shooting up bad guys, something every growing boy enjoys. I don't know if its a recent thing or not but there seems to be this fear that this stuff does harm to kids, yet my generation seems to have done decently enough.

Here's an easy comparison:

Star Wars Episode 2 has many of the same components as Star Trek, would you let your daughter watch it?

Let the kids watch a kids movie. Star Trek is PG-13 so probably a pre-adolescent can handle it okay, but the 4 year old is going to be bored, or scared, or both at different times.

This movie wasn't made with little kids in mind and we shouldn't force it on them. There are better ways to introduce small children to Star Trek.
