Aside from the Wolverine movie that comes out around TREK XI's release, what other movies are set to come out around our release date..

Also...which movie will be the bigger hit? Wolvering vs Star Trek XI

I'd say Wolverine in the first weekend at least. It has a bigger fan base from the X-men movies, plus superhero flicks are popular at the moment. Trek may build slowly as a sort of sleeper hit, but I'm not expecting box office records to be shattered by Trek.

These days X-Men is more popular than Star Trek.

:wtf:

We have an inflated sense of our popularity, that is true. X-Men made more at the box office with it's last three movies than Trek, but a lot of those were casual movie-goers.

World-wide (and I don't have the numbers), Trek has many, many more fans.

gotta be trek!

a reimagining of the best scifi franchise ever (yep better than star wars)

VS

an x-men spin off

if trek doesnt take more then i'll lose all faith in humanity.... then watch lots of trek to regain it. so in a strange way il b happy either way :)

Eh, it's possible the Wolverine movie will suck badly negating the inherent popularity of the X-men. We just don't know. If it's a huge success it could hurt Star Trek XI opening, but I suspect if Star Trek XI turns out to be a good quality entertaining movie, it'll do well regardless.

So, basically, we are putting "X" up against "XI".

My vote goes to eleven, because it's one louder.

:guffaw:

I think Trek XI will clinch it myself - True, X Men have been very successful, but:
a) the third one sucked
b) there's a difference between an 'X Men' film and a film called 'X Men Origins: Wolverine'. Meanwhile Star Trek comes out with no subtitles, no 'who the heck is Wolverine?', no 'that sounds like a comic book', and one heck of a nostalgia factor, even for those who haven't followed it for 40 years (yes, amazingly, such people exist).
c) I can see Star Trek's marketing surpassing Wolverine's, both in scope and in quality.
d) Let's face it, every Trek fan is going to see this film at least twice. If only a second time to note major gripes, the nacelle cap brightness in precise candelas, and reasons to boycott a third visit, to post about online.

I doubt that's true. The X-Men movies do well, but is that because people care about those characters or because it's summer and they want to go see the latest big slam-bang Hollywood blockbuster and they already saw the LOTR/Star Wars/Spider-Man/etc flick?

I've been a fan of both Star Trek and X-Men since, basically, forever. I honestly can't recall which I latched onto first. But the way they've evolved on screen, Star Trek has definitely done much better. I'm not too impressed with the X-Men movies - only the second one was really very good - and sometimes I think Heroes is the better adaptation of the X-Men spirit.

I stand by my statement. These weren't just one time summer blockbusters. The trilogy was released over a 6 year period and grossed over 600 mil at the box office. How much money did the last three Trek films gross by comparison? And with Enterprise being canceled in 05?

X-Men is more popular than Trek these days. Maybe XI will do something to change that.

Interesting. And if you look at it just right, Star Trek 11: The Wrath of Khan goes to eleven, doesn't it? Very interesting.

My guess is that it's mostly dependent on the marketing each gets. IMHO, Trek movies have never been advertised well. Sucky comedies that everyone with an IQ over 40 knows will be awful based soley on the trailers get a lot more exposure than any Trek movie ever has. JJA has already done more than what was done in the past what with an early teaser. I think we'll see more trailers and heavy advertising so my guess is Trek will beat out Wolverine. As another poster said, X:3 wasn't all that good so Wolverine might lose some of the general audience that will go see Trek instead on the first weekend.
