Is That His Real Name?

T'Girl

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Geordi LaForge, I got to wondering is that was his actual given name? The few men I've met through the years with the name of Geordi, it was short for George. Geordi was usually a childhood nickname, some people use their nicknames instead of their given names.

So, could Geordi stand for something else?

There's nothing in any of the episodes (that I remember) or on Memory Alpha that suggests that Geordi is a nickname.

As I recall, his history is that Geordi is native to Africa on Earth (at least his familial origins are from Africa and not from any present-day "Western" nation) it could be a common name to whatever region his family comes from.

Newcastle-upon-Congo? :)

I'm sure it could become a common-ish name in four hundred years. It's not like there aren't any names today that didn't exist in the 1700's.

According to The Continuing Mission Geordi was named after "the well-known Star Trek fan" George La Forge.

i know someone called geordi, though i think he was named after the character due to awesome geeky parents

I know an Abby who isn't short for Abigail; I'm sure there could be a Geordi who's just Geordi.

I always thought it was short for Geordan and just spelled different from the usual spelling of Jordan. Kind of like Aimee, Amy or Sean, Shaun, Shawn...

It's implied he went to school in North America during First Contact, at least to me it seemed that way.

Geordi may or may not be of African origins. But if it is, I could buy it.

Probably the most likely explanation, Geordi could be one of the top 100 names on Earth in that era.

One of my sisters was almost named Penda (both my parents beyond trekkies), but then named her Calypso.

One of my Professor's first name is Jordan and the others Professors call him Geordi, but I figure it's spelled Jordy.

^ just when I thought everything was discussed to death after all those years, we are discussing whether the spelling of "Geordi" is canon

^ Was Geordi's name ever spelled out on screen?

I thought the episode "Conundrum" would've shown LaForge's -- or is it Laforge's? -- personnel file, but apparently his wasn't shown onscreen. Nor was Worf's or Riker's. So do we canonically know the spelling of Worf or Riker? Maybe it's Wharf and Ryker?
