Eh - as far as the Romulan War goes, I'd rather ignore Enterprise altogether. I think it could be a lot cooler if they did it with less advanced ships and technology.

I'm a TOS girl at heart. It would be interesting to explore the galaxy in a groovy miniskirt.
I love seeing all these posters who jump up and say they'd join (and be an officer no less), when it never occurred to 98% of them to join the navy.
I did. Twice. In high school, I was on the ROTC academy track. A few years ago, I looked into OCS and the reserves. But I decided that was not the path that my life needed to take to accomplish what I wanted out of it. If I did go forward with it, I'd have been either in public affairs or military intelligence because of my degrees.
Besides in the Navy, there's no velour uniforms. How can you not have the smooth feel of velour? Touch it. Feel it. Now that's a uniform.
I nearly joined the Navy after High School (I really wanted to work in engineering), but my mom dissuaded me. She had predicted war would come in three years. A year later, we had 9/11, and two years after that, the invasion of Iraq.
If I had the option of joining Starfleet, it would be purely for scientific endeavours. The Navy as it is now, is mostly for militaristic purposes. Of course, Starfleet being what it is, even science officers get phaser rifles
