Is Star Trek: Picard lasting 7 seasons a possibility?

I don't expect Picard to last seven seasons, though I'd love to be wrong. But recasting Patrick Stewart would be in poor taste. If Patrick Stewart dies, Picard should not be recast, out of respect to the actor.

Now, if they wanted to have series about the Stargazer with a young Picard, that would be different. Picard would have to be recast whether Patrick Stewart would still be alive or not, because there's no way he can pass for being in his 20s, 30s, or 40s.

It's the same reason why I think Old Spock shouldn't be recast (still too soon) but I'm fine with Young Spock. I think it's a show of respect to the actors that they can't be replaced just like that, especially when they contributed so much to Star Trek.

I'd be cool with Star Trek: Stargazer or Star Trek: La Sirena, or Star Trek: whatever following on from Star Trek: Picard, but I don't see Picard lasting much longer and I hope that the series doesn't keep going after Patrick Stewart is done with it.

Though hypothetically, if Patrick Stewart were to die before the end of the series and they decide to keep it going, then the actor to replace him should be Jeri Ryan.

Yep. I'm expecting a Young Picard to show up in flashbacks in season 3, and they're probably hoping to do a Stargazer series down the line if people like him.

I could see that.

Given that Rios was the focus of one of the three tie-in novels already published I'd say there's a non-zero chance of PIC getting retooled/rebranded as La Sirena, Rios or something similar, particularly if Jeri says onboard.

I really hope they do something with Rios, Laris and the others after Picard is over, because it'd be a shame to only give them three seasons.
I'm sure they'll find some way to continue it. I firmly think the 25th Century is Alex Kurtzman's Plan B if the 32nd Century doesn't take off beyond Discovery. Either of those two would be fine with me. I feel like I'm done with the TOS Era.

Given the focus on Orions in Star Trek discovery and the Star trek cowboy bebop vibe of the la sirena It is a major possibility that we are doing to see Rios take on the Orion syndicate.(if the show in this scenario keeps visiting places like Freecloud based on in universe logic if they keep fighting bandits in the Alpha Quadrant and the stakes are high enough then the Orion syndicate will have to be somewhere in the picture)

And if PS dies who would be the best actor to replace him?

What a charming question.

Well, you can be assured that if SirPatStew passes away during the show's run that Picard is finito.

As for 7 seasons - I can't imagine any of the live productions running that long. 7 is only cited because 90's Trek productions went that distance. They're not making 26 episodes / season anymore either.

I would like to see a series pick up after Picard in the 25th century with some fresh faces and an honest attempt at world building again. I have no appetite for anymore of the 32nd century after Disco.

Putting things like age aside (Sir Patrick is very well aware of his age and so are PIC’s producers, I am sure they have emergency plans and scenes they have already shot for any eventuality) - they have always said that they have a plot and material for three seasons. Sir Patrick signed on for three seasons. That doesn’t say much in show biz, of course - but the fact that Sir Patrick most likely won’t let himself be tied down for seven seasons anymore probably does. He has always said he wants to diversify his work as much as possible, and I don’t think playing Jean-Luc Picard for seven seasons falls under that. He still wants to play Lear, and he’s not getting any younger, so, my guess is that this is something he’s tackling.

However.

The show never says WHICH Picard it follows. It’s not called “Star Trek: Sir Patrick Stewart as Picard”. From all the hints regarding the third season they do have a very clear chance to somehow turn it into a Stargazer show with a younger Jean-Luc who is played by someone else OR at least make a spin off should they not wish to continue PIC itself. Maybe that was the plan all along, even - I remember Sir Patrick saying once that PIC is “the start of something wonderful”, and I’ve been wondering for quite a while what he meant by that. What I could see Sir Patrick doing is cameos, as older!Jean-Luc somehow reminiscing about his Stargazer days or something, whatever. But I just can’t see him shooting the same TV series for years and years at this point in his career. He does things because he wants to do them, not because he has to do them, he has the luxury of choosing, and choosing is what he has been doing for a long time now. His credo has been that he wants to tackle new stuff. Unless the pandemic changed his entire attitude and he’s like “In these uncertain times I’d rather work on this than not work at all”. That’s always a possibility, of course. But then, like I said, he knows he’s not getting any younger, and he also knows how exhausting it is to shoot a television series when you’re the lead character, so I’m pretty sure this will weigh into his decision of whether to continue with PIC or not.

I think the simplest thing to do if they want to continue Picard without Patrick Stewart is to just rename La Sirena to Picard. Turning the show into being about the Stargazer would turn it into a completely different show. All the other characters would either be children or not born yet. Unless they're willing to scrap the entire cast, I don't think they're going to do that.

Of course, I'm biased. Despite my saying they could do a Stargazer Series eventually, I'm really done with prequels too (not just the TOS Era). I don't normally like them in general. Early-DSC was the exception for me, not the rule. I'm glad that DSC's first two seasons didn't feel like a prequel (I mean that in a good way). The only other prequel I'm a fan of is Better Call Saul, where I just kind of disregard Breaking Bad (unpopular opinion) because I like the tone of BCS a lot better and it somehow manages to stand on its own pretty well.

They could call it "The Adventures of Young Jean-Luc Picard"...

Heck, they could just name a new starship the U.S.S. Picard, and continue on from there.

Not that I think that's going to happen. They'll just end the show when Stewart can't/won't want to do it anymore.

As for a standalone Stargazer series? I don't see that happening either, if only because the producers seem pathologically incapable of making shows that don't take place either immediately before TOS, after the Berman era, or super-duper far in the future.
