Is Star Trek "great?"

I felt an urge to clarify my answer a bit.

As much as I love Trek, it has a lot of warts. Over time you can learn to ignore those warts or sometimes even love them, but they are still there. All of the series have bad and sometimes awful episodes balanced with the amazing ones.

For a mainstream science fiction TV/movie series I guess it is great, maybe the greatest. When anything goes on for a long time though it has to falter and have serious flaws.

Just keeping it in the science fiction realm, when I think of great or classic works I think of people like Asimov, Heinlein, H.G. Wells, Verne, Clarke, etc.. Sure they all turned out some stinkers occasionaly, but if you look at their absolute best work, to me nothing Trek has done in TV/book/movie or whatever form even comes close to truly great classic science fiction.

At it's core, Trek is basically sci-fi for the masses. And there is nothing wrong with that. It is 'true' sci-fi that has remained popular in ways that only fantasy/sci-fi hybrids like Star Wars have been able to compete with. The fact that it has been just 'good' for the most part is pretty amazing.

That's my take on it and obviously just my opinion folks.
