Is Star Trek 2009 overhyped by desesperate Trek fans?

The OP's question assumes concern about whether Star Trek would continue or not.

In 2006, I didn't give a flying fuck whether there was ever another minute of Star Trek committed to film (or DVD or whatever).

So no, no "desperation" involved.

you're gonna do a review of her review here?!?!
You posted the link to those reviews citing it as evidence that XI is fantabulous!!! So I looked over a few and I found them lacking. I like more comprehensive reviews not a synopsis. And the sections I chose to mention were highlighting why I don't put much weight into your holding up rotten tomatoes to bolster your position.
maybe she'll answer you. then you can come tell us all about your little buddyship with a bonafide Top Critic in RT.
No, I'm not your typical fanboy/fangirl who needs to connect with critics or JJ Abrams. You won't see me posting an open letter.

I didn't ask for the film, I didn't throw a fit demanding what I wanted, etc. I would have been content without a new film, however, am even more content that I did get a very good film and my money was well spent.

If I was truly desperate then I'd go watch NV or something. ;)

I may be playing the devil's advocate here. But I got the feeling that a lot of Trek fans, including me, at some point, are overhyping the movie in desperation.

A lot of us, thought or at least worried, that Star Trek as a TV/Movie franchise was now death for a couple of years. Enterprise didn't have the same commercial success than preceding series, while the recent movies didn't either. Star Trek have been around almost every year since 1987, its incredible in television history. It felt realistic to expect tptb (executives) to put Star Trek to rest for a couple of years. Maybe even something like 10, 15 or 20 years.

Now here come the big surprise. They announce a new Star Trek movie, headed by a director on the rise (JJ Abrams). Already at that point its beyond our wildest dreams. Its not about the quality of the product anymore, its about the survival of our beloved franchise. We don't mind if Star Trek have become only a brainless action blockbuster movie anymore. Average Trek is better than no Trek. Sure the movie have many faults, but we dont care. Star Trek is alive and its a commercial success!

Is it the right signal to send? Thats is Average Trek is better than no Trek.

I must admit that somehow I feel the same way. The franchise needed a commercial success at that point. But I got another signal to send. Now that the introduction of the rebooted characters is over. I wish the next Trek movie will have a stronger storyline.

yes, it seems that Trek fans no longer want quality...just style over substance. This ST movie is all MTV for the Nexted generation.

Troll thread is trollish.

This board is the only place on the entire internet aside from maybe IMDb where the tiny handful of people who didn't like the movie are so disproportionately over-represented.

Well Star Trek is overhyped nonsense. Thanks for telling me that. I could have gone through life believing that sitting down and enjoying a movie five times in the space of two weeks was a mistake. What the hell do I know about entertaining Trek anyway? I've only been a fan for the majority of my life.

Despite my appreciation and enjoyment of the latest film, I remain apathetic about whether the studio makes another Trek TV series or feature film. If nothing else is made, then I'll still be able to enjoy the previous productions that I like, and I'll still be able to ignore the previous productions that I dislike or have no interest in watching.

I guess all I'm saying is that I enjoyed the new movie, and I'm not desperate.

Phenomenal film, and to answer your question, no it's not overhyped. It's a remarkable achievement.

My three trips tally with yours. Fourth trip, just as good!

JJ said he was making a film the general public would enjoy, and that had lots in it for ST fans as well.

No desperation here, but thrilled it's been received so well!

Star Trek fan since I was 4 (I'm 29 now). Got hooked on the original series, the one with all of the colors because of color television's burgeoning popularity, the show with all of the awesome special effects and the costly budget to produce said effects of the day. "Spock's Brain", "The Trouble With Tribbles", "Arena", "A Piece of the Action", "All Our Yesterdays", "The Alternative Factor", "Court Martial", "Where No Man Has Gone Before", "Shore Leave", "This Side of Paradise", all of these elements can be found in the new movie.

You know, I'm not usually a style over substance man. Have you ever seen the movie "The Man From Earth"? The entire movie takes place, essentially, in one room, amongst a group of people. I love that movie, yet it is all substance, and nicely done I might add. It is one of my top 10 favorites, so no, I'm no MTV bobblehead, I'm not a "pretty lights and no story man". Your blanket generalization is filled with many holes, I'd wager, because many of the good people here on this board are like me, and they loved the movie also, but your comment is exactly the kind that indicates no forethought into what it really means, and instead casts aspersions on those you disagree with, simply because you disagree with them.

Nah. Scifiwire is much worse.

Dune buggies indeed...
While I disagree with Vagando's post and find it needlessly offensive, I consider the monster chase to be a far more worthless piece of action time-wasting than Nemesis's ridiculous dune buggy chase.

I liked the monster, that was original in Star Trek! very unoriginal in other movies but great here. But I liked the entrie movie and I was very worried when i got to the theater. Remembering the last few crap-fests of the ST films made me shudder :)
But this movie was interesting, fast paced and the actors looked good in contrast to the TNG movies.

I don't think it's being over hyped; the people that liked it liked it, the people that didn't did not.

Hmm.

You know that at this point "MTV" would be "your father's 'Star Trek'," don't you? ;)

There are so many of those kinds of references being thrown around - "MTV", "90210" - that some posters are, in the very attempt to denigrate the movie by suggesting that it's aimed at thoughtless young people, actually revealing that they're at least a decade out of touch with who the young people are and what interests them.

It's hard to be an astute social critic and observer when you're not really observing much at all.

They should have at least said it was like "Gossip Girl". Geez people get with it.

So are you saying that those who throw out "90210" and "MTV" as empty statements without any follow through are... aspiring to be the next Ben Lyons? :p
