I'm sure I read somewhere that while they could have had it done for the Christmas '08 release... Abrams was thankful for the extra time the May '09 date gave them to tweak things.
I don't think that's a rush job. The only reason the first film seemed to take so long is because they pushed the release date back 5 months or so. Otherwise it would have been filmed not that long before release. Also, the sets have been built, the main cast is in place, they know what worked last time. A lot of the legwork has been done. And these days, frankly, there's little difference between making a movie and making a TV show, and the best shows on TV (name any you choose) produce their episodes within the space of a few months from writing to filming completion.
The term "rush job" is meaningless unless the director, cast and crew can't handle the pressure.

I would think a good indication about the movie being pushed back from the June 2012 release date would be what the prinicple actors have going in the next few months in terms of projects. Especially movie projects. If it looks like they are booked solid for the next few months, then I'd be worried. Not talking about stuff they are currently doing and will be wrapping up soon, but stuff starting.

The point is, that the film was finished and locked for the original release date.
Of course they used the extra time for tweaks, but the film was done.
Obviously it was releasable... which is why they could make the Christmas '08 date. But the fact that Abrams saw tweaks that could be made given the extra time probably means the film wasn't 'done' to his satisfaction.

You could go to any director and he could name dozens of things they would tweak or things that weren't done to their satisfaction.
You know what they say about art-projects (and, yes, movies are an artform too); they are never finished, only abandoned.
Don't forget the writer's strike had to do with the delays on writing the first film as well.

Not really. The script was finished before that. The film was pushed back because Paramount felt they could make more money with a summer blockbuster release.

Their currently writing it, right? It could be finished in a few weeks or months with enough time to make it in time for the release date.

Just for a quick comparison, The Dark Knight Rises is set to film starting in May and ending in November, for its July 2012 release. That film probably requires A LOT more principal photography work than Trek XII will because of the amount of location shooting involved.
The Dark Knight was filmed off and on from April-November 2007, about 8 months before release. Trek XI filmed from November 2007-March 2008, about 9 months before its originally planned release date of Christmas 2008, and by which point the film was essentially completed.
So, assuming Trek XII gets into production/filming by May/June as well, they should be on a similar track to Trek XI.
