Is SNW getting too goofy?

Star Trek has always had some silliness in it, just often in the 90s everyone had a stick up their ass and reacted to the silliness in the most dry and serious manner possible. Shows like SNW and Lower Decks are recognizing the silliness and are leaning into it, and are coming off all the better for it.

Besides even in a comedic episode like Those Old Scientists we still got some poignant and meaningful moments, like Chapel realizing her relationship with Spock may be doomed to fail or Mariner and Boimler convincing Pike to celebrate his birthday with friends for exactly the same reason he was planning on spending it alone. And I'm sure the musical episode in a few weeks will have some meaningful and poignant moments of its own, so the show definitely not "too silly." Star Trek is always silly, SNW is just self-aware enough to have fun about it.

The Motion Picture is probably my ideal type of Star Trek but I still really like SNW. It is very much it's own entity, it has great characters played by a fantastic cast and it does adopt different genres well. I think it's fine as it is.

I've a feeling she won't be fine. Knowing how her story goes won't change the emotional impact on the character or the audience if the writing and acting is on point ,

Well theyll all be dancing and singing in the episode. Maybe she she can ask the alien that might be causing the musical for a happy song.

It's toeing that line just a bit this season. We'll see how the musical episode goes. As others have stated, the problem is the ten episode season length. With more episodes these outliers (for lack of a better word) wouldn't have so much impact.

Agree. Having too many light hearted l, goofy episodes in a ten episode season can kill it for some. I never really like when Trek got to sill. The Cartoon Crossover and now the musical will probably be the two goofiest episodes imo. From the clip I saw of this week's musical episode it looks to use the exact same gimmick that buffy and Once Upon a time Used. A paranormal/fantastical/pseudo science reason (basically a big mysterious energy wave) that washes over the Enterprise and makes everyone sing and dance. Lol. So I think we all know how it will go. I'm not always a big fan of episodes like this. Buffy's was one of the first. We shall see...

The original 2003 Teen Titans cartoon to me was able to strike the best balance between goofiness and seriousness. I haven't found another show since that got this balance quite right, including Strange New Worlds.

It is odd to see a lot of hand wringing about this...I think SNW strikes a good balance of being serious on a macro-level whilst being able to be light-hearted/fun/silly on the micro-level occasionally. I VASTLY prefer SNW's silliness to DS9's Ferengi episodes, most TNG L'waxana episodes (not Half a Life, that one ruled), and almost any holodeck episode in any show. The silliness in SNW has a lot of heart and a warmth that makes it most welcome for me.
