Is SNW getting too goofy?

Nope. There were plenty of TOS episodes that winked at the audience in spots, in addition to the very serious episodes.

For me that was something missing in the Berman era as the Trek shows took themselves way too seriously overall.

But that's the common misconception about TOS. Well I'll take it if it's "winked at the audience in spots", but many people, when they're getting defensive about SNW, like to point out how TOS "was comedic all the time", which is really not true. That was a drama show first and foremost, which had a three or so outright comedies out of 79 episodes (I Mudd, Tribbles, Piece of the Action) and Gene Coon's tenure as showrunner of about a season's worth of episodes, in which episodes tended to have a humorous coda with everyone laughing it up on the bridge, but many of those came (often incongruously) at the end of otherwise pretty serious business (Galileo Seven, The Changeling immediately come to mind). Comedy left the show pretty much completely once Fred Freiberger took over.

And that was out of 79 episodes. SNW has had 16 so far, at least three of which were 100% comedies, and most of the rest had some heavy lightness going on (sounds like an oxymoron, but it feels heavy because it limits the show, IMO). Does anyone think that Pike's pirate laugh in "The Serene Squall" was a particularly good moment of comedy? I don't think so. But did it make the character look silly? Hell yes. Just one example. The addition of Pelia as strictly a comic relief character only adds to the impression that somebody among TPTB may see this show as a comedy first, drama second.

Interestingly, although tastes differ, and some people here clearly enjoy the lightheartedness, some of the best-rated episodes from fan conversations or also imdb ratings seem to be the ones that were dead serious, like "A Quality of Mercy" and "Ad Astra Per Aspera".

SNW is not getting too goofy. The season 1 fairy tale episode was fine with a very touching ending (with MBenga's daughter). The LD crossover was great. And I look forward to the musical episode, it looks very good. And I am sure there will be plenty of very serious episodes upcoming too in this and future seasons.

SNW has had 17 episodes and two were outright comedies so far:

SNW S1E5 - Spock Amok
SNW S2E7 - Those Old Scientists

No, I don't consider SNW S1E7 - The Serene Squall or SNW S2E5 - Charades a comedy. They had personal and dramatic situations for Spock with comedic elements.

(And no, I didn't think Pike talking like a Pirate in The Serene Squall was all that funny; but the cooking situation, and the "We may have taken the Bridge a bit early our Mutiny still in progress..." was.)

Also, I would only consider :
TOS S2E8 - I Mudd
TOS S2E15 - The Trouble With Tribbles
'outright comedies' for TOS, But, in the same vein as SNW S1E7 - The Serene Squall or SNW S2E5 - Charades

TOS S2E17 - A Piece Of The Action
falls into the 'drama with comedic elements' as does:

TOS S1E6 - Mudd's Women
TOS S1E15 - Shore Leave
TOS S1E17 - The Squire of Gothos
TOS S1E19 - Tomorrow Is Yesterday
TOS S1E24 - This Side Of Paradise

TOS S2E25 - Bread And Circuses
TOS S2E26 - Assignment Earth

TOS S3E1 - Spock's Brain
^^^

(Hell, the premise and execution of it are so ridiculous to begin with it might also be considered an 'outright comedy')

So yeah, in 79 TOS episodes you have 2 outright comedies and 9 'dramatic with comedic elements'.

Basically 11 out of 79 with some not so serious/outlandish or funny aspects.

And then we have one 'Holiday Themed' Halloween episode - S2E7 Catspaw but modern TV/Streaming doesn't really do that anymore.

So, that 12 out of 79 episodes that don't really do a 'dead serious' Star Trek story.

For SNW it looks like it will be 5 out of 20 so far:

Two outright comedies:
SNW S1E5 - Spock Amok

SNW S2E7 - Those Old Scientists

Two dramatic with comedic elements:
SNW S1E7 - The Serene Squall

SNW S2E5 - Charades

And one 'Musical Themed' episode (not yet streamed, but the promo is up from SDCC): SNW S2E9 Subspace Rhapsody

But to be fair TOS also redid similar stories (2 in the first season right after one another in airdate order with TOS S1E2 Charlie X and TOS S1E3 Where No Man Has Gone Before); and TOS S1E21 Return Of The Archons, TOS S2E3 The Changeling, TOS S2E8 I Mudd, and TOS S2E24 The Ultimate Computer are all 'Artificial Intelligence gone wrong that Kirk talks into their own self-destruction' stories. So yeah, in TOS there was a lot of repetition we haven't seen much of yet in SNW (And that's something I hope we don't with just 10 episodes a season).

In the end though, I guess the only things I care about are:

- Did I find an episode entertaining/Did I enjoy the time spent watching?

If the answer is 'Yes', I really don't care whether it was 'dead serious' or 'comedic'.

YMMV.

All of the SNW comedy episodes so far have had beats of heartfelt drama included in the storylines instead of being comedic all the way through like the most of the other Trek series. This balance helps the the show not to seem too over-the-top comedic, for me anyway. The laughter sets up the tears.

It's definitely goofier this season, but it's about the right amount. This crew is not credible as a quasi-military hierarchy whatsoever, so the production might as well lean into the hangout vibe of it all. I'm enjoying it.

I stand by what I said earlier. And I will add here that (believe it or not) "Spock's Brain" was not intended to come across as funny, but they were initially going at this from an angle of touching upon the then-recent development of human organ transplants being done successfully (a heart in the real world). But that is of no consequence here.

My main reason for posting in this thread is to say that, having just seen "Those Old Scientists", SNW now had the first comedy episode that I actually enjoyed a great deal. My guess as to why: this episode was co-written by Kathryn Lyn, who wrote one of LD's best shows, "wej duj". (To tell the entire truth, she also co-wrote the disastrous "Charades" - but I suppose if that had been an LD episode, it would've worked, just not on SNW.) So there's an actual comedy writer at work here. And the gags worked, Newsome and Quaid contributed their comedic timing. And if this latest episode showed anything: they have it, and they belong in comedy. Everyone else on SNW? Hmmm, just partly.

They’re pushing it a bit; with only 10 episodes a season, I think it’s absolutely fair for a couple of comedic episodes, but no more. For me, these short seasons needs to be mainly meat, with just a little dash of comedy seasoning. DS9 got the ratio just right for me, but then their seasons were much longer.

I hadn’t heard there was a musical episode coming up. Gads. There’s one I’m immediately tempted to skip.

This is something I’m struggling with with various Trek podcasts. It seems like this fandom has to be serious all the time and treat Trek as this intellectual thing that should be dissected in academic classes. The first thing Trek should be is entertaining, and I appreciate episodes having some levity in them.

Absolutely.

The elements of "this fandom" as you describe it regarding the podcasts is a herd of dinosaurs and SNW is the giant meteor.

I think you must define 'disastrous' differently to most people. Charades was anything but.

https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-2x05-charades.314583/

So 'disastrous' that more than 150 users here voted it 8/10-10/10. To put that in perspective, that's 73% of those who voted.

Presumably you're one of the three people who gave it a 1/10?

If you didn't like it, whatever, but it was very, very, very far from disastrous.

"Charades" was wonderful. Easy 10.
