Is SNW getting too goofy?

I love the show and also like how it doesn't take Trek to seriously like dome fans do. But, with the crossover (admittedly have not seen it yet) and the music episode is it getting too goofy?

With Picard and Discovery over and almost over, I think P+ is going to make SNW their main ST show. I like fun Trek but the music episode may be too much.

Saying that, I did love the Scrubs music episodes, but that was a comedy.

Also there are 10 episodes a season only. I could see it more with 16 plus episodes a season. They had a terrible episode last season (in my opinion) with the fairy tale one. I love the show, but IMO that was the worst NuTrek episode.

Thoughts?

I'll let the season play out. It had silly episodes and serious ones. The musical is hardly my first choice but "Lost in Translation" is excellent scifi.

No.
I didn't like the LD crossover at all, but I can appreciate the nuances, the intent and the effort. It was a nice idea, it just didn't work for this Herbert.
I am not looking forward to the musical either. Paint Your Wagon almost ruined my love of Clint Eastwood westerns... My wife complains every time I watch Good, Bad and Ugly or Josey Wales - "You've seen it a 100 times already!" but then she'll watch Grease and the Mama Mia's a 1,000 times and not think anything of it. Hmmm, maybe she'll FINALLY like a Star Trek episode!

This is something I’m struggling with with various Trek podcasts. It seems like this fandom has to be serious all the time and treat Trek as this intellectual thing that should be dissected in academic classes. The first thing Trek should be is entertaining, and I appreciate episodes having some levity in them.

I'll admit that I'm a little concerned that the musical episode might tip the balance a little too far over to goofy, but I'll wait and see what they do with it. But I'm a fan of more humorous episodes like "I, Mudd," "A Piece of the Action," and "The Trouble With Tribbles," so I certainly don't mind some humorous Trek. Just as long as it doesn't become the norm.

I don't know if it's too goofy*, but I do believe it's a little goofier this season overall than it was in season one. IMO, the show is leaning into the vibe they feel works best.

*Personally, I think it's mostly on the good side of serious vs goofy, but occasionally steps over. Everyone's mileage will vary.

Exactly. To my mind, what Star Trek does best is present a variety platform. This season of SNW, and last season as well, showcased the most variety, which is probably off-putting because of the short seasons, so they are less spread out.

I’m not the biggest fan of when Trek gets way silly. My personal tastes have always enjoyed “A Piece of the Action” but then lost interest at “The Trouble with Tribbles.”

I suppose everyone’s line is different.

My bigger concern is that the music won’t be too good. I watch a lot of musicals both live and in movies. I certainly believe many of the actors can probably sing. It seems like every actor in the world at least thinks they can sing.

But there just aren’t a lot of Meredith Willsons or Frank Loessers out there. Even Disney struggles with bland music and lyrics a lot of times post Menken.

Still, I live in hope.

I don't mind Trek being goofy - some of the best Trek episodes are goofy (The Magnificent Ferengi, Bride of Chaotica, Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy, Trouble with Tribbles, etc). It also makes a degree of sense for SNW to be the goofy one, given PIC and DSC tended to be heavy drama.

Of course, it still has to be done well - I'm with you on the fairy tale episode in S1 being the worst of modern Trek (albeit that was at least partly due to the ending, which was not in the goofy category).
