Is Season 8 of the Office worth watching?

I haven't seen a lot of it, but the few episodes I did catch were pretty funny. I honestly don't notice that Michael is missing.

Surprisingly and happily, yes. Andy is perfect as the replacement, in that he really isn't a replacement, but part of a superb ensemble cast.

I haven't missed Michael at all. Andy does a nice job in the manager role, but James Spader is just pure awesome.

They're really pushing Creed more into the background which is too bad, I think he's hilarious.

I think Andy is kind of lame as the manager, but Spader is a delight as Robert California. He is just so bizarre.

It's worth it, IMHO.

I agree. I'm not sold on Andy as manager. He got the role due to the higher profile of the actor involved imo.

The more Spader is present as Robert California the better the episode is and that's because all the other characters are trying to figure him out and he plays thing so aloof about it all.

Is it worth watching, yes but Andy is no Michael. Whereas Michael could carry an episode I've not felt that for Andy thus far.

You realize Ed Helms didn't become a real manager and that its all pretend, right?
I admit I haven't seen all of S8 so far so is there some dialogue in an episode I can YouTube to see what you're meaning.
If he's not a "real" manager that can only make Robert look bad at some point(s). All a ruse to maintain morale?

That's not what he meant.

Nothing against Ed Helms.... but the show was already starting to feel really old and tired to me even before Carel left, and after a couple episodes this season I just decided I didn't care anymore.

Don't leave me hanging then.
If he didn't mean it literally then what? Figuratively?

He did mean it literally. Ed Helms did not become a manager. Andy did. It very likely has nothing to do with Ed Helms being a "bigger" name.

Wow... don't be literal idiots. Ed Helms got the starring role because of his emerging movie career; especially his popularity with The Hangover films. He must have had his contract renegotiated at some point because he suddenly started appearing in the opening credits a year or two ago.

This.

As to the OP, it's still worth watching. It isn't as good as the best of the Carrell era but it is as least as good as the lesser Carrell seasons.

When he isn't having angry fits or panicking, Andy is usually a boring stick in the mud. I still can't believe he became the new manager.

I still get a couple of chuckles per episode, but I haven't tuned in to watch live all season like I used to - I'll usually catch up on sundays. Erin is basically my main reason for watching now. I've been enjoying Spader, but I think they're still trying to get a real feel for how to use the character. Andy as boss is alright, but some stuff has felt like a rehash from Michael's former days.

Otherwise, the whole show seems to have shifted a bit. It seems like every episode is trying to cram in 6-7 disconnected plots that only get a scene or two and don't go anywhere. It's almost more like little vignettes rather than cohesive stories. And some of the characters (eg, Kevin) have just gone way too far into caricature to be funny anymore.

While the show isn't quite as exciting as the older days, I definitely still enjoy it, and I barely notice Michael being gone. I watch the show for the ensemble and not for Steve Carrell, who was pretty annoying half of the time. I love the secondary characters most of all.

I would say the quality is pretty much on par with the previous couple of seasons. If you liked those, you should probably continue to watch. I actually really like Andy as manager, and I don't like the Robert California character. But it does seem like everyone in the office is getting a little more screen time instead of it being the Michael/Jim/Pam show like it was for a while, which I appreciate.

This. Ed Helms really isn't a bigger name than the rest of the main cast (except maybe BJ Novak).

Wow...calling people idiots. Smart move.

Ed Helms has had a starring role on the show for several years. His character now is no more "the lead" than Jim or Dwight or Pam are. The show has evolved into a true ensemble this year where as previous seasons have been completely Michael Scott focused. Besides Helms "emerging movie career" is no more stronger than Rainn Wilson's (in fact, Wilson's is arguably stronger, and, as an actor, is much more recognizable).

Besides, Andy becoming manager is not unexpected at all from the creative perspective. Of all the main characters that already existed, Andy was the most obvious replacement if they wanted to keep the goofy boss aspect of the show.
