Is recasting Leia for Episode IX out of the question?

What they should've done is edited it so Leia sacrificed herself the way pink hair did, a heroic end for the character and then this wouldn't even be an issue. Somone deserves shooting for not thinking of it.
The movie's climax would have been undoable had they gone that route.

It would have been *doable*, but it would have necessitated a re-shoot of just about everything that came after that point. Which just isn't practical after principle photography has already ceased, plus it could have had a knock-on effect that screwed with everything else that was going on in the story, tonally and thematically.

No living person needed to sacrifice themselves. A droid could have done it, and that's assuming the autopilot alone wouldn't have been sufficient. Johnson just felt the need to glom onto the suicidal kamikaze ship thing that's been done so often of late, including in the Trek and Alien franchises. It was unnecessary here.

They probably thought they needed at least some lifesigns on the ship to keep the First Order busy chasing it for another few hours before the Resistance could not only make planetfall but also get out a message and give a bit of time for allies to answer.

The plan didn't involve the First Order looking right through their cloaks and blasting the transports within the first twenty minutes of the run.
