Spoilers Is Picard season 2 a failure?

No commentary on your selections, just using it to set up mine:
No worries. I've reached a particular spot that I wasn't at before. And I'm not talking about Trek.

But, anyway, back to the topic, I didn't even think to include the animated series. If I were to include them, my thoughts are:

LD Seasons 1 and 2 --> Mildly amusing, it only made me laugh-out-loud once. It's not bad, but it lost me.
PRO Season 1 --> Love this show. If I were 30 years younger, this would be my favorite of the new series.

It isn't a failure. The first few episodes were great. They did kind of stretch out the story in the middle, but the last episode picked up steam, and I'm eagerly anticipating the finale. Probably would have flowed better as an 8 episode season, but still, it was a good one (assuming the finale delivers). One thing I like is that the characters are more fleshed out this season. I didn't much care for Jurati in season one, but I've loved her this season. I'm also intrigued by the direction they are taking the Borg and Q. So it is a win for me so far.

There are two ways you can look at it. From the fans/critics' perspective, did the fans/critics like it, and from the business perspective of Paramount.

The fan and critic reaction is now largely negative. The season is a failure in the eyes of many people.
I have not seen a shift in public opinion this drastically in such a short amount of time.

Here is an overview of how the discussion goes outside of this forum:

The opinion about season 2 went from 10/10, "best episode of Star Trek ever" to 1/10 (0/10) "worst episode of Star Trek ever" (some say "worst season of Star Trek ever").

Angry Joe went from "the first two episodes are really good, the first episode is excellent" to 0/10

Paramount's perspective:

Paramount has two metrics to determine the success or failure of a show.

The last time these numbers were publicly available was at the last earnings call.

But we have other public data points:
In Canada Picard is broadcasted on normal TV and viewing numbers are publicly available from Numeris, the Canadian version of Nielsen.
Numeris publishes the Top 30 shows per week for free.

Picard S01E01 had 1.851 million viewers.

Picard S01E10 had 1.382 million viewers.

Picard S02E01 is not in the Top 30 (no S2 episode so far was in the Top 30).
This means Picard S02E01 has less than 0.963 million viewers.

While PIC Season 2 is turning out to be my least favorite of the six live-action New Trek seasons so far, I think the "honor" of worst season of Star Trek overall goes to ENT Season 2.

TNG Season 1 is probably of lower quality, but at least its badness is fun to watch and I really like the good episodes. ENT Season 2 is just dull. "Cogenitor" is all it really has going for it. When I binged ENT in 2020 (@1001001's :( emoticon conned me into watching it), I thought Seasons 1, 3, and 4 were all okay (especially S4), but ENT Season 2 really lived up to -- or should I say down to? -- its reputation.

I'll take PIC Season 2 over ENT Season 2 any day of the week.

Random crap posting but Cogenitor is one of those episodes that really makes my blood boil since the Taliban comparisons were pretty easy to make when it first aired. Apparently, archer thinks it would be terrible to take a refugee woman from said culture because "culture" dictates a woman is property in their society.

They're not legitimate critics. They're being disingenuous.

Negativity = Clicks = $$$$$

They've been predicting Disco's cancellation for the past four seasons.

Come talk about ENT Season 2 with @Charles Phipps and myself. As dull as it is, it's still more interesting than whatever Char's drummed up.

Gotta love the early-2000s. :p

Which he?

I think Picard is actually going to probably wrap up a lot better than Season one in terms of all of its lingering plot hooks. We've already got the fact Jurati is probably the Borg Queen from an alternate dimension and how Picard's feelings toward his dead mother have influenced his distrust of relationships. I'm pretty sure it's all going to fit together fairly solidly. The thing is that I suspect the biggest result of this will be that the season would have probably been far more enjoyable as one long Netflix binge watch and not one weekly episode at a time.

They don't seem shy about praising it when they like it!

I mean I don't want to seem like I'm taking Char Kais' side here, the side of absolute hate, but the absolute hate for YouTube critics isn't great to see either.

Whew. With those lousy numbers i would definitely call it a failure on all levels.

I'm wondering if they got a Nastygram from Paramount. :shifty:

I don't see S2 as a failure. Life's problems aren't always going to be solved over the course of a two-part episode.

I really think it's gotten very bad, the annoying thing is it did start out a lot stronger than the first season but to me it's gotten really bad. I guess it could pay off really well but I have my doubts, it's just not what I want from a Star Trek show. That last episode has actually ruined a few days of my life because I legitimately can't thinking about how bad it is. That said it clearly works for some people especially on here and all the power to them, I'm glad they enjoy it.

I do think at some level the season is most likely a failure, as the general reception has been very bad. The last episode has a 5.4 on IMDB and the general reception is bad.

They're not legit? Yet they have 1.4M followers to Paramount+ 440K. That places Paramount at the same level as Nerdrotic. Hell critical drinker has 1.18M.
But who cares? What matters is SNW. Once it starts in Canada. Their rating numbers will speak volumes when compared to STD and STP.

Only deleted to make it easier to read not to hide anything you have said.

You obviously get the TV ratings better than I do so I won't question your stats on that but I just wonder with your IMDB points whether it would be more appropriate to moderate those figures and ignore all the 10s and 1s?

The 1s feel to me like they are people protest voting rather than being genuine, and similarly the 10s are likely overstated.

I'll do the maths later but I reckon it will be interesting to see the relative position of the episodes once they have been moderated and I would guess they will be much closer in ranking than they currently sit.
