Is Jackie Chan Hollywood's Asian version of the "magical negro?"

It could have been a bus filled with random, everyday people...but the studio/screenwriters had to "stick it to the Asians" by injecting that racial-jab into a scene in a rather mediocre movie.
You're assuming that the studio and the screenwriters had some sort of evil motive here, when it's more likely they were just looking for a moment of humor.

Lighten up, you'll live longer.

Just imagine all the fumes that come out of his head when he sees a real tour bus filled with Asian tourists and how each and every single one of them on the bus personally offend him.

If that is their idea of humor, then they must really love Mickey Rooney's performance in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

The girl is 10 years younger than me, so that precludes me from doing that.
it is the duty of every man to bang a girl that is 10 years their junior if given the opportunity. (only for those 28 and above - ok, statutory police?)

I grew up with VHS. She grew up with DVD.
I grew up with compact discs. She grew up with ipod.
I grew up with a dial up phone. She grew up with a cellphone.
I grew up with a color TV. She grew up with an HDTV.
Roger Moore was James Bond when I was 9 years old. Pierce Brosnan was James Bond when she was 9 years old.
George H.W. Bush was president when I was in high school. George W. Bush was president when she was in high school.
When she asked me what I thought of "Indiana Jones" 4 months ago, my mind was on "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Temple of Doom," while she was thinking of "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull."
Think of all of these things as discussion points for after the young flesh banging session.

No, she is way too young for me.I just consider her to be a friend. Just because we both lived in Chicago, are Korean American, and attend the same church does not mean that we have enough in common or related interests for me to ask her out.
Interests! Interests he says!

I wish her the best, whatever she ends up doing, and whoever she ends up with. As for me, at age 32 I really should be dating 30-year old women rather than girls who are barely out of college...
Oy ye of little experience despite your years.....

Nice try...

But, I don't bait so easily into traps like John McCain. :guffaw:

As an Asian and Asian-American, I don't see where the hell you are going with this?

BTW I wish that Stephen Chow would get more success in American films (and hopefully the Green Hornet will help his American career). He is a great actor and a solid writer.

My complaints about Asians in films? The women. Don't get me started about how stereotypical they portray Asian women in American films.

I find it interesting that while Good Will Riker can bitch and moan about these seemingly glaring and obvious "negative" portrayals of Asian-American actors, he manages to omit others, which at least to my knowledge are generally seen as positive, like Hiro Nakamura and Ando on Heroes, or Jin and Sun Kwon on Lost.

i'm suprised Kung-Fu Hustle didn't do as well as it did, it's one of my favorite films

Asians aren't random, everyday people? How the fuck is it that you live in Southern California yet think seeing a tour bus with Asians on it is some kind of bizarre event that occurs with the frequency of Halley's Comet? Have you not been to Disneyland? Have you never seen a bus or train station with tourists headed for Vegas? Have you never been to LAX?

How does this "stick it to Asians" and how is it a racial jab? Don't just keep repeating it, answer the question for a change. Where's the damage to Asian people? What's demeaning to say that Asian people are often tourists? There are a couple billion of them for Christ's sake, some are bound to take a trip now and then, don't you think?

Plus, to use your own actual bigoted example from the OP, if it was a bus full of "kikes," no one would give a shit and it would be a non-issue. Turns out Jewish people, like many others, like taking trips and tours.

If it was anything like every Star Trek episode featuring Germans has them as Nazis, or every movie featuring Muslims has them as terrorists, or every movie featuring Italians has them as mobsters, then I could kind of see your point. These are negative depictions that get constant reinforcement. How is being a tourist a negative depiction in and of itself? If anything it's a positive depiction that shows a willingness to explore and learn about other cultures. Now, if they did a stereotypical depiction of those tourists that would be one thing, but they didn't, despite you lying about it in your OP.

You've started God knows how many threads like this one and I can't recall a single one that actually featured a genuine case of blatant racism or even clear stereotyping against Asians, even though you could find legitimate examples if you tried. It's always been your own ridiculous over-sensitivity projecting the things you've wanted to see onto major mainstream films.

You're trying too hard to look for racism against Asians everywhere, which leads you to demonize others for no good reason and make bigoted statements yourself. Where does the hate for Clooney, Spielberg, or "kikes" come from except for the fact that they're not Asians?

Your whole identity hinges on being Asian to the point where you have nothing going for yourself as an individual. Have you ever made a topic where your excuse for your or other's behavior didn't fall back on the fact that you/they are Asian, as if that means you or the people you know have to adhere to some monolithic set of rules of Asianess? Have you ever expressed interest in stalking a woman who wasn't Asian? Do you associate with people outside your own community? Do you approach any subject without first considering it specifically from an Asian perspective instead of just from your own perspective? Because if you have it sure hasn't been reflected in any of your posts.

You've made stereotypical and bigoted remarks against Asians in your other topics that far exceed anything in any films you've brought up. Knock it off and deal with your own problems.

I guess I'm bigoted against Asians, then, because one of the funniest things I've ever seen was a busload of Asian tourists posing for pictures in front of the Nike factory outlet store in Lancaster, PA. Of all the things to pose for a photo in front of when you visit America, the Nike factory outlet would not be high on my list.

No, no. I would laugh my ass off too.

"So that's where our shoes are going..."

The I thought to myself "Steven Spielberg approved of this scene in this script? How would he like it if it was a bus full of kikes wearing yamikas! It's the year 2008 for crying out loud?"

You do realize that "kikes" is a highly offensive term and highly inappropriate for someone trying to claim some sort of moral outrage....

so- GWR---did you or did you not know?

Given how completely offended he was last year when Rosie O'Donnell went off about "ching chong ching-a-ling" or whatever it was she said, I'm guessing he probably does know. Which is why he used it.

I'm used to Rosie O'Donnell's "ching chong ching chong" behavior/attitude so I wasn't too offended by it. What did offend me was knowing that a white straight man would've been ripped to shreds if he did the same thing while Rosie faced no consequences.

And let's be honest here, Asians gathering in protest doesn't get the same kind of press here as blacks or gays or illegal aliens gathering in protest.

Considering Asian Americans don't have a voice -- and no those "mouthpieces for corporate-owned media" like Connie Chung don't count -- in the American public consciousness, it is no wonder mainstream America still draw question marks "???" when it comes to Asian Americans. Besides on the surface stereotypes, most of the public still don't know who we are, what we stand for, and what we are all about?

So not only do you speak on behalf of ALL Asians, you also have the authority to determine who is and is not Asian enough?

You hoping to become the Asian Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson?
