Is it worth watching Disc?

I finished season 5 yesterday. I watched it sped up and enjoyed it more than I expected but I don’t see myself ever rewatching it. It was the best of all the previous seasons. There were some nice story ideas this time that tied into previous lore but I feel like I still barely knew most of the characters. Every episode seemed to focus on and be resolved by Burnham, who feels very intense all of the time and the least interesting character since their pre-Discovery life is barely mentioned anymore.

I’m sure OP has made up their mind by now but I recommend watching the first 3 or 4 episodes and continuing if you like it. However, it doesn’t get better after the first season like other Trek shows and all of the season long mystery boxes fall flat so don’t continue for either of those reasons. If there is an alien species you like that are in Discovery, don’t watch it for them as they will be radically different.

"Discovery" is far from all bad, it's got plenty to like. But perhaps it's biggest downside is that it demands a lot of commitment, because the serialized plotlines get very thick...only to be poorly thought out much of the time.

I stuck with it for the supporting characters and the world-building, both of which improve vastly with Season 3. The protagonist Michael Burnham is grating for the first two seasons, but Season 3 finally drops the imitation-Spock motif and she instantly becomes far more likable.

Even the early seasons have some good stuff--namely Harry Mudd and the Mirror Universe.

So it it worth sticking through to the end? Depends on what your main focus will be. If a well-written plot is the most important thing to you, then this show will probably frustrate you. But if you're a fan of very flawed characters, focus on character development and relationships, and world building, then DISCO may be right up your alley.

I'd also recommend it to anyone who's specifically interested in:
  • The Mirror Universe
  • Harry Mudd
  • The Trill
  • The Breen
  • Time travel
  • Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs, Tig Notaro, David Cronenberg, or any of the actors in the show, all of whom get to show their chops (bar arguably Sonequa Martin-Green in the first two seasons, and she gets to show her full potential in Season 3 onward)

Main problem with Disco is the constant degradation in storytelling. The very first episodes of season were in fact quite promising. It felt like a true Star Trek series and with Yeoh it had a great supporting cast.

The show got really botched up over the course of the next seasons. Producers and writers actively advocated for Disco being the most queer show on TV. They put a lot of effort into that, hired some bad trans act??rses and completely forgot about the important parts of character development, especially in season 4 which was judt unbearable.

Don’t watch it, its just a mediocre tv show like so many others ok streaming tv. Watching Disco will steal your time and leave you with a feeling of blandness.

I have no problem with the fact that this thread still gets a considerable amount of traffic but it is mildly amusing to me that it does because people are still responding half a year later to my question that i could have very easily answered myself by just looking into the show. lmao

Anything worth doing is worth doing slowly...

...or something.

With all this hype, you've gotta watch a bit of it and get back to us:lol:

Yes, DSC is worth watching. It's a grand visual treat, intelligent and interesting. Seasons 3-5 are very different from the first two seasons.

Recently, I've been re-watching season 1 & 2 episodes all the time for a comfortable background while working on something else.

Personally I enjoyed it for the most part, but I did find it hard to stick with. Each season wildly jumps about in tone, and I feel like that's a feature not a bug. It's an experimental show. It goes off in weird directions and tries things that don't always work. When it's good it's some of the best the franchise has ever produced. When it's bad it's at least interesting.

It's also got Michelle Yeoh kicking dudes in the face. Automatic 10/10 for that alone.

visual treat and interesting is subjective.

i could never accuse it of being intelligent lol.

There are quite a few moments where old-fashioned Star Trek shines through.
themes or principals, sure, but never intelligence. really badly written and paced show, tricks you into thinking its intelligent with some surface level stuff, but really, nothing there.

Can you please give me some specific examples of this "surface level stuff" and how it differs from other shows?

I've been reluctant to watch Discovery since... well, since I was made aware of its existence. I've heard some pretty bad things about it, but I've also heard people only hate it because it's new. I've recently been considering giving it a try, though. Is it actually any good/worth watching?
Always make up your own mind. Lots of Trekkies today are proverbial sheep. Don't be one.
