Is it true there is going to be a Batman TV show like Smallville?

^You can see how Harvey in that proposal was the prototype for Smallville's Lex.

As for a show about cops in a superhero world, we are getting a TV adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis's Powers comic, which is along similar lines to something like Gotham Central, I gather. Also, my colleague Keith R.A. DeCandido has just published an original novel in eBook form called Super City Police Department: The Case of the Claw, which is also along those lines. His site: http://www.sff.net/people/krad//

^ What about a L&O/ Homicide type show with supervillains or freaks as the bad guys? Ordinary cops dealing with superpowered opponents, not to mention a press that berates them for not being as good as Batman at defeating them. There is some potential there.

Not as long as there's the bat-embargo. You couldn't use the classic villains. You'd also have people bitching that Batman never shows up.

As Christopher B mentions, there's a "Powers" show being greenlit for FX which largely covers the same concept. I think that will work better because you won't have the existing bat-baggage to deal with.

^ Well, leaving aside the Bat-Embargo, I was just talking about the concept. I'll check out the Powers show if it airs over here.

"Powers" is not really anything like "Gotham Central". They're similar only in the fact that they're both police based superhero comic books. As great as "Gotham Central" is (and it is) "Powers" in my opinion deals with a lot more issues and is a little bit more complex. Actually Bendis was heavily inspired by Bruce Timm's work on "Batman The Animated Series" when he and Oeming began conceptualizing "Powers".

I think Dina Meyer was the show's greatest strength, period. Indeed, I daresay the Batgirl scenes were my least favorite parts of her material, since the costume wasn't very good, and since I'd much rather see her face. Plus we've seen plenty of versions of Batgirl on TV and film, but Oracle was something new.

See, I thought the costume was pretty decent by TV standards. And, of course, Meyer looked great in it.
I was quite happy to see a live-action Batgirl and I remember being very impressed by the costume. The whole thing felt like a real treat, not a rehash.

Good grief, that's not even a new costume! They just modified Alicia Silverstone's Batgirl costume from Batman and Robin!

They changed the boots and logo, repainted the gloves and belt, and added a cowl (probably the same cowl Silverstone briefly wore as a motorcycle helmet), but it's the same outfit, complete with the ridiculous "corset" styling that makes it look more like a slutty Halloween costume than a working crimefighting outfit.

Interesting. I hadn't noticed, even when I saw a side-by-side comparison when I was looking for those pics. I still think it's a good Batgirl costume though, aside from the heels of course. And I don't even notice the corset styling. It's too seamlessly integrated.

Sure anything can be improved, but I don't know what would make for a radically better outfit.

Wasn't the original pitch that evolved into Smallville built around a preBatman Bruce Wayne?

Yes. I've read the pilot script. It was very 'Smallville' with young Bruce hanging with Harvey Dent and Selina Kyle and battling the evil manager who's been running Wayne Enterprises since his parents death.

Weren't they looking at making a Gotham Central procedural for awhile?

I don't know if I've ever heard of plans to do that, but I think it'd be a cool idea.

Then cross your fingers for the FX pilot Powers to get a pick-up. The comic it's based on is pretty good, but not as great as Gothan Central was.

It's a concept i'd like to see explored on TV, but only if it has a budget to support it. I'd expect 6 to 8 episodes a season.
