Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the sequel?

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

I think it's funny that there are people who think there's such a thing as "good beer."

Sonak... didn't you die in a transporter accident in 2271? glad to see an "god forsaken paradox" brought you back! PS I hate beer...

I wanna have a wee nip with Scotty ;)

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

probably because budweiser sucks, tastewise. it tastes nothing like beer should. and as I often say: only americans can get drunk with american beer.

Yes, but given how Americancentric Star Trek has been at times I can only conclude that the US was the only major power to survive WW3 and thus rules the world

Which is why budweiser is still around.

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

Back to the topic of action... Why should the action be cut back? I loved all the drama and action. Kirk having Spock hold him by his throat was so cool!

you just answered the question as to why to cu the action.

The phone was vintage like the car, it made sense that it was there.

It doesn't make sense that Budweiser survived however.

Sure it does, all it need be is a commercially viable company to continue on. That's how this stuff works. Make a product people buy lots of and you get to thrive on into the future.

I never thought the phone was meant to be an antique like the car but rather a retrofit for it.

yeahhh... that's an accident I'd rather not discuss. I still have nightmares.

I hate beer as well. I've NEVER had any I would classify as "good," just seems to go from "bad" to "awful."

All the Kirk/Spock hate? They can kick alien asses like that too!

Do you need some therapy, I could suggest some people...

TO me beer has a nasty after taste that I can't get rid of.

Summer popcorn movies have to be mostly action. I know it's frustrating because Star Trek has always been so good at developing characters, political situations, and themes - you can't do that when everything is exploding all over the place. But Star Trek will never been good at that ever again until it's back on TV and can maintain a less action oriented pace.

I have always loved beer.

Some people though have little or no tolerance for bitterness in their palate and would have a problem with beer because of this.

How come the product placement complaints never mention Jack Daniels? (Or Slusho, lol)

Because Budweiser sucks and Jack Daniels doesn't. As far as beers go, I find Bud to be incredibly bland and watered down compared to Sam Adams or even Coors for that matter.

I think its success here is open to interpretation. Whenever TNG went out of its way to be high minded for me it tended to stumble. Now when it just thought to tell an entertaining story things were OK.

Preachy Science Fiction does nothing for mer personally.

Stumble in the ratings? I thought it was pretty strong throughout. Star Trek went downhill in ratings later, but it certainly wasn't because of the big ideas presented in VOY and ENT. :rommie: It was because sci fi in general was becoming a bad fit for broadcast TV due to the balkanization of entertainment as competing formats like cable, DVDs, gaming and social media started to eat into leisure time.

What I meant is that TV and movies are good at different things. You want character, plot and thematic development? TV's the right medium. You want visual whiz-bang and action? That's what movies do best. Don't expect movies to deliver what movies aren't designed to deliver, especially not the summer popcorn type of movie.

"Preachiness" is in Star Trek's DNA - that's part of how Roddenberry conceived it. The last thing they should do is lose the essence of what it is, because then all that's left is generic mush. There are enough movies out there that are generic mush as it is. Star Trek has specific character, and let's keep it that way.

And I haven't really followed the Budweiser argument but my own personal canon is that Bud is the ancestral form of synthohol. ;)

When you superimpose ratings for TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT, you see that the downward trend in ratings actually began with DS9, while TNG was still on the air. VOY and ENT's general downward trend is a continuation of a pattern that began with DS9.

TNG, DS9, and VOY spiked in their series finales, but ENT did not. On the other hand, the premier of ENT had a higher rating than VOY's finale. However, within the first ten episodes, ENT had lost half its viewers, and it was back down to the level of the general steady decline begun with DS9.

This initial spike of interest in ENT and then rapid loss of viewers cannot be explained by "balkanization". It suggests something more along the lines of "disappointment".

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

The overall downward trend line, which happened regardless of series quality, is due to balkanization of the audience. However, ENT in particular was disappointing and didn't help matters. :rommie:

And DS9 was a terrific series, yet the downward trend continued, showing that there's no deterministic connection between ratings and quality. Another factor is in play.

Because of what's demonstrably true based on the trend lines you can't demonstrate that by the number of folks who watched it; it's just something that disgruntled Trekkies tell one another. So what?
