Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the sequel?

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

Marshak & Culbreath are already working on the novelization of that. It's called Reach Around of the Phoenix.

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

which MANY on this board have stated in the same way

Many? In what universe?

You know, every now and then there will be someone who doesn't like this film who will make this claim that there are supposedly this overwhelming legion of fans who despise the film and hate it even though these people have been seen, heard from, and certainly didn't feel strongly enough to make their voices heard in any polls, etc. I liken it to a cat who feels threatened, so they turn to their side, makes their fur stand up, arch their body and try to make themselves look bigger. But in the end, it's still the same sized cat. No matter how inflated they make themselves to be.

I sort of like this idea that Trek was for "Joe Sixpack" and that 'Cerebral' people wouldn't enjoy it. I spend all day writing highly complex papers which will be read by about 200 people (if I'm lucky) and before that I wrote a PhD that was so 'cerebral' it sends me to sleep, let alone anyone else reading it. I'm quite happy to be 'Joe Sixpack' at the cinema, I go to be entertained.

Trek 2 - bring on the action!

Exactly. I'm not going to make people read my CV to establish my brain-power cred, but I'd say my tastes run more towards "cerebral" than "six-pack," and I thought ST09 was a good movie in the Trek tradition.

For me, Star Trek really isn't "intellectual" entertainment--it's not like TMP was adapted from an Umberto Eco novel or something. It was basically a TV script amped up to feature length. There's nothing wrong with that, but to claim that it's the epitome of intellectual cinema seems a bit misguided. I have a feeling most film critics outside the genre see much more in common between ST09 and TMP, or whatever other "cerebral" Trek fare is out there, than with what they consider real experimental or intellectually-satisfying film.

So I'd like to see plenty of action in the next film, even if it means the scene where they sit around the conference table debating over whether to save the Andorian ambassador ends up on the cutting-room floor. I want it to be fun.

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

I would love that, but seeing as how all films these days are only meant for Joe-Sixpack, I highly doubt it.

~The Castellan: Feeling intellectual stuff forever gone from films~

Oh, how I long for another TMP.......and yes, I enjoyed that one, so :p

Does your ego need that kind of stroking?
Do you need to feel that you are better than the rest of us?

I like TMP... kinda.
There is nothing intellectual about that film (and the 'is there nothing more, is that all that I am' is spelled out for the audience in such detail, that it really doesn't require a lot of intellectual effort on the audience's part to follow what's going on).
It's... just... sloooooooooooo...rrrrrpppppeeeeedoooooes aaaaawayyyiiyyyiyy...

I'm still waiting for that five-hour-version with the Klingon subtitles for ST. ;)

And, isn't it amazing how correct that Onion-'report' was?

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

TMP is like a feast for my mind, and Trek 09 is fast food for my mind.

I've never found TMP particularly insightful or deep. Just a bit pretentious. I tend to lose interest with it right around after Spock shows up on the Enterprise. On more than a few occasions I've even and a fellow Trekker friend of mine have dosed off while watching it. This didn't ever occur with any of the other films or TOS.

If "NuTrek" if fast food I'll eat more of it.

Although I like TMP, I agree that it's pretentious film, not a smart one. The living machine V'ger, with almost unlimited power and ability, never even thought to wipe the muck off it's nameplate:ack:.

I'd rather be "Joe Sixpack" than an arrogant fan who thinks he's clever because he likes to watch Star Trek.

My actual unjustified arrogance is based in other things.

Really - the idea of ST:TMP as some kind of "intellectual feast" only makes sense if one otherwise lives on a starvation diet of Little Lulu comics or something. There's not much to it.

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

I think the glorification of Violence was begotten by the acts of the Romulan ship. If he had killed your Father or Your mother you'd most likely feel the same way, and he did offer to help. You can do the right thing and not like it. Kirk was different in this timeline, wasn't raised by the same family, never knew his father, even had contempt for star fleet at least at first. Also Spock had not yet undergone Colinar and purged all emotion and wasn't there in any situations to help level Kirk Out yet. I think its a pretty feasible universe. Thats just my opinion though.

It's not so shallow as to care about such things.

I should add my fellow Trekker friend also hates Trek 09... he's got a hang up with product placement and for reasons I can't fathom totally can't handle "action".

Once he saw the Nokia it was all over.

I mean when I go to a "Summer blockbuster" I sort of assume it will have "action".

Though he has commented that TMP "Needs aliens". I'm not sure what he means by that exactly.

I have no problem with product placement so long as it doesn't take me out of the movie. And considering the fact that there are still a few companies and products around today that date back to the 1800's I have no problem believing that Nokia and Budweiser will still be with us in the 23rd century.

That's what I said. When or if stuff like communicators come along, it'll be because of such companies development of communication technology. As for the ringtone, your communicator still needs to tell you that it should be answered.

From a practical movie business standpoint I understand why they do it.

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

The phone was vintage like the car, it made sense that it was there.

It doesn't make sense that Budweiser survived however.

Why not? Of course, there's nothing necessarily to say that Budweiser is still an active entity at that point either.

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

probably because budweiser sucks, tastewise. it tastes nothing like beer should. and as I often say: only americans can get drunk with american beer.

It tastes "weak as piss" as we say in Aus. Watery, slightly urinous, lacking any hops or crispness or depth or any other nice yummy adjective that can be applied to beer. I've probably tried 70+ different beers in my life (conservatively) and it's easily, dramatically the worst thing calling itself beer ever.

I suppose they could have completely revamped themselves ST:XI's era. Perhaps they make Budweiser from quadro triticale and it's delicious.

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

Back to the topic of action... Why should the action be cut back? I loved all the drama and action. Kirk having Spock hold him by his throat was so cool!

I'm not a beer drinker, but maybe they have new "fruity" flavors. I must remember to ask about that next time Chris (Pike) and I go to that cadet bar!

Re: Is it too much to hope that they'll cut back the action in the seq

Kirk having Spock hold him is ALWAYS great!
