Is "How I Met Your Mother" the best show ever?

Because I'm loving it!

After not really being all that interested, a bunch of my friends recommended that I watch it. So a little over a week ago, I put it on my Netflix queue.

I have just now finished Season 2, and I can't believe how much I love this show. No, it's not the greatest show ever, but it's certainly the greatest show I am currently watching. The characters are funny and lovable and very down-to-earth. I also really like the way the show is narrated and how the flashbacks are weaved into the story.

In a way it almost reminds me of a new version of FRIENDS. A bunch of 20-something friends living in the city just trying to make their way in the world. The stories can be slightly over-the-top, but at the same time they manage to stay grounded in reality. There is an excellent balance between comedy and drama, and I think the whole show has a lot of heart.

I couldn't stand how whiny and annoying the lead is (and having a lead you hate really does hurt a show).

But beyond that, I'm not getting the concept at all. So Bob Saget (whose voice isn't as deep as his younger self??) is telling his children this story. This big long irrelevant story, YEARS in the making, and they still haven't met their mother? His kids must think he's the single worst storyteller ever.

Doogie is hilarious in it, though. :) Just not enough to keep me coming back for more.

Well for one thing, the continuity--for a sitcom--is really good.

I thought it was excellent to start out with and one of the few sitcoms I could stand watching. However, I kind of think the show has slipped a bit in quality, over all. The last season had several groaners, I thought.

<----Yeah, I'm a fan, though I've only seen the first series:)

Good new is that one of the UK Channels is repeating them from the first episode starting this week:)

I have the benefit of watching it on DVD, so even if there are less-than-great episodes, I don't even notice because they only last 20 minutes. That said, DVDs are only out through Season 3, so I can't speak to the more recent stuff.

I don't know if it's the best ever, but it's definitely fucking awesome. :)

Agreed. I just love how creative the writing is on this show. For instance the way they play around with the flashbacks, or explain those ridiculous (but often true) terms like "underpants radius". :D

I especially love when they show what someone "should" have said, and then pull back and show the retarded, dumbass thing they actually DID say. lol

OK show, but can't hold a candle to The Big Bang Theory. If Neal Patrick Harris ever bails on the show, then there'll be no reason to watch at all.

I love Big Bang, but it often seems to hit the same notes again and again, with the same kinds of jokes in every episode (much like that creator's other show, Two and a Half Men).

Mother seems to play around with the structure and formula a lot more, which I really like.

I agree with this....I tried to get into How I Met Your Mother since it aired next to Big Bang Theory, which I've always loved. We rented the DVDs from Netflix and started watching. Normally once I start a show on DVD I see it through even if it's not my favorite. But we had to stop after 2 DVDs with this show. It wasn't the worst sitcom I'd ever seen, but it just wasn't funny. The male characters are nice, they have personalities and interesting humor. But the female characters are written horribly, completely one-dimensional and never funny. Which is sad, because Alyson Hannigan is one of my favorite actresses. It's hard to be into a show when you dislike half the characters, so I had to give up on this show.

I agree wholeheartedly. The 4th season is easily my least favorite, and Ted became almost wholly unlikeable.

Here's hoping for a return to form with the 5th season.

No, it is NOT the best show ever, and this past season has been pretty darn weak. HOWEVER, this is the only sitcom I watch, and that is pretty much because of Barney. Ted and Robin really annoy me, but Barney and Marshall keep me tuning in.
