Is Greece an example of the failure of Socialism?

I'm afraid that I have to agree with my fellow Irishman,default is inevitable.Asking an economy to grow while implementing severe austerity has never and will never work.
Speaking for ourselves I'm just devastated by the straits Ireland finds itself in...a sound manufacturing/export base,an infrastructure improved beyond measure(thanks largely to EU funds)and a well educated,young workforce.And all of it flushed away by greedy bankers, insane property speculation and politicians so incompetent and so corrupt that it defies belief.(And yes,we do get the government we deserve but fuck,nobody deserved Aherne,Cowen and their kind.)
And although we find ourselves in the PIGS group I would respectfully draw a distinction between Ireland and Greece...with absolutely no disrespect to my Greek friends.

I don't know, we kind of deserved the Ahern government. I mean, the guy was under investigation by a tribunal for corruption, his excuses for suspicious financial transactions were bizarre, he suggested that economists warning of forthcoming disaster should kill themselves... and yet enough people still elected him for a third term. :brickwall: It's a pity that it took a financial catastrophe for people to realise what he really was.
 
John Stewart on the Daily Show did a great take on this crisis on last night's show. One thing I didn't realize is that Greek's get not only 6 week's of guaranteed vacation annually but are protesting an annual retirement age of 53 where they are also guaranteed 80% of their pay.

That for sure is part of what's broken.

You're wrong. The EU needs to be improved, including further integration in some areas, but to get rid of it entirely would be a disaster for this continent.

What the EU needs to do first before attempting any further integration is to connect with the peoples of the EU.

Support for the EU even amongest the more pro-EU countries seems to have fallen over the last few years, as at almost all if not all referrendums held in EU countires regarding a peice of EU legislation has been rejected by the people.

The big debate the EU needs to have is what sort of EU do the "people" of the EU want.

A Trading bloc at one extreme or a United States of Europe at the other.

I totally agree with this, that it's the private sector at fault i.e BANKS which is all down to capitalism ideology - think of the problems we had in the other countries like U.S and rest of European countries like UK where the bankers basically fucked it all up. My ethos is to round all Bankers + Politicians and have them executed on the spot that should sort them out and those who follow wont take such big risks.

The private and public sectors both contributed to the wreckage and they should therefore both be changed so they don't do so again.


It seems to me that the developed countries that weathered the recession best were France and Germany, which both had moderately conservative governments before and through it.

Please tell me what massive overhauls have been made to the private sector to prevent another crisis of this magnitude.

I completely agree, I utterly resent the way I was forced to vote on the Lisbon Treaty twice because we voted the "wrong" way the first time around. :rolleyes: That's the second time we've been forced to do that in this country in a decade. The EU definitely needs to reconnect with the people if it is to survive in the long term.

But the EU, in whatever form is takes, is an incredible accomplishment; the cooperation and unity of a continent where the favourite pastime over the last few millennia was killing one another. We can debate over which direction the EU takes, but I think it would be a mistake to argue in favour of its dissolution.

I'm not a big fan of murder, personally. :shrug: So I prefer to advocate the seizure of their personal assets for use in repairing the damage they caused.
