Is Apple a cult?

Apple appeals to ignorant people who only care about the name or looks.

Excuse me? I've played around with other tablets and the iPad simply blows them away in speed and how smooth programs actually run.

Please. The iPad isn't superior to comparable Android-devices that cost less money, give you the option to expand memory and don't require you to hand over credit-card information.

Funny, I've got three iPads in my house and have never given Apple my credit card info...

Have no idea where that rumor came from. I believe in any nation that has its own itunes (app store, music store, ect) Apple has gift cards available and those can be purchased in person with cash, for online purchases, so that you never have to use a credit card. In fact you can at least in the US go to pretty much any type of store buy thousands of dollars of gift cards with cash and even use them to buy your computers online direct from apple and not use a check, cashier's check or credit card.

Can you buy the Ipad on contract (instead of buying it outright) somewhere (I could see that requiring a credit card, or credit check or deposit)?

I just feel sorry for people who are sucked into paying $200 for an $80 hard drive when they want to upgrade the specs of their computer. I mean come on, they use standard internal parts, they have no excuse to charge that much for them.

I built my PC (which can run iOS, btw) for about £350 all in, and it outperforms macs that cost up to about £3000. It's pathetic. You're paying for the glowy apple on the front, an OS you can't modify, and the fact you aren't allowed to fix it yourself.

Apple appeals to ignorant people who only care about the name or looks. I know there are some people who will buy their products for an actual reason (beats me what that reason is though) My brother told me he's willing to pay twice the price for a mac laptop because it looks nice. I mean come on, that's just fucking stupid. I've never seen an apple product that can do something another brand can't at half the price.

I hear some people saying they like them because they last, if you get an ipod nano wet, even slightly then it's a gonner (from my experience). And I've got a Fujitsu laptop made in 2004 that still works absolutely perfectly.

Lets see I have modified every computer I have ever purchased from apple. I have not bought a new one in the last year, but even the ones that are designed for you to take into a for upgrades, can actually be upgraded yourself as long as you have the right tools and knowledge.

As for if you get a pod wet, well it depends. Yes it can utterly fall, so can pretty much any mp3 player that isn't designed to be water proof. When they say a product lasts, it means using said product under ideal circumstances. For example, my refrigerator will last longer inside my house, then outside when its 50 below zero, or outside in 110 degree heat.

And yes like almost any device you can make most devices cheaper yourself. People do this all the time. My parents nearly built their house (they did hire an electrician for a bit of the work, everything else was done by the family) and they spent 39,000. for a three story home on an acre of property if they would have had it built for them it would have been over a 150,000 (this was back int eh 70's). Yet I beat you didn't build your own home.

How about clothes how much cheaper can you make apparel then what you can buy it for. Its vastly cheaper, yet I beat most of the clothes on your back are not made by yourself.

How about the furniture you sit on, my brother in law builds furniture as a hobby and its cheaper and he makes very fine detailed pieces. But I beat like most you buy furniture manufactured from others.

Why people feel the need to bash others because they will pay more is utterly insane. There is a very slight chance (so small as to be statistically impossible) that you don't make purchases that don't have either extreme markup, or that if you learned to do it yourself you could do it far cheaper.

Ever drink soda? Every drink fountain soda? Do you have any idea on the percentage markup on that product? If you do, and you drink even one fountain soda a day over two years that markup on that, will be greater then the markup on most apple products (used a two year frame as that is a standard computer companies life span of device).

Seriously do you go into threads about any commercial product to remind people that there are always options that are cheaper, and wonder why people bought one thing when they could buy another for so much less? If not, what makes you think its different with computers. That its an ok thing to bitch or insult people for buying a more expensive brand for that type of product? It really, really isn't rational behavior.

Haven't checked the german version of Itunes or Apple in general but many online stores in Germany have the option to directly debit your bank account, pay the invoice by transferring money from you to the store's account by online banking and many of them also offer PayPal (or some other version of that system) which doesn't need a credit card either (at least not in Germany).

The only time i ever had to use my Visa Credit Card was when i was buying something internationally and the store only accepted credit cards for online payment (which is a very small minority nowadays).

I think you missed the point.. i believe everyone understands the fact that companies do tend to put up sometimes huge markups on their product. What he tried to say is that people willingly and in full knowledge pay double to get a machine from Apple when there is a competitor brand that does exactly the same for less money. They do this just because it is an Apple product and not because it is better technology but they do it because of the logo on the machine which brings us to the entire point of this thread, namely if Apple can be considered a cult.

I'm told that some workplaces prefer Apple products, i.e. graphic design for example (don't know if that's true anymore) because the programs Apple provides are better but if all you do is to use an Apple laptop/Tablet/Phone to browse the net and do the occasional game and you insist it has to be Apple.. well, then you open yourself up to such comments.

I didn't insist on an Apple product, but when I tested out various tablets, the iPad simply performed the best and had the sturdiest construction. I can't tell you how many times my five year old had dropped them and they're never worse for it.

So if I'm a member of a cult, then I'm a happy cultist.

And if nothing else they're always good for this.

Okay, you don't need a credit card to register an itunes account (which you need to register your iPad), you only need to spend a few extra dollars.
That is so much better.

No different than Amazon, Steam or anything other service where you purchase products online. What was the point of your argument exactly? You don't have to give Apple your credit card information to use an iPad, just to purchase things on it.

You don't need a credit card (in the US certainly) to buy an ipad or to make purchases for it or on it. I don't have a credit card. I haven't had a credit card since 1998. Yet I have bought several Macs, severals Pods, 3 ipads, and a phone. I have made purchases on the phone, pad, and macs, and I have made purchases for software, music or video on all three devices.

I repeat I have never had to have a credit card to do any of this.

In fact I ran into a huge problem last year, when I tried purchasing a car. My lack of Credit history was seen as worse then having bad credit. I nearly had to beg my parents (seriously I am 45 years old) to co sign, before finally finding a major dealership who would deal with me. As I also wish to buy a home, I am starting to now build credit specifically, and am soon going to get a credit to assist in that. But to this date I still don't have one.

My point is, that people who are new the the whole Apple "experience" will have to set up an itunes-account to register their iPad, in the process of which some form of payment information is required to be entered (most people will not know the gift-card trick [oh, look, even more money spent before using the Apple-product] to circumvent that).

You can set up your Android device without all that (the google-account doesn't require payment information or a gift card-trick).

I did not have to have a credit card to register my iPad nor did I need one to sign up for iTunes nor did I need a gift card. And how is buying an iTunes card 'spending more money'.

I think you're bitching simply to be bitching without having any idea of what you're talking about.

EDIT: I'm actually curious. Do android phones or tablets have a coin slot on them to make purchases? If not, how are app/music purchases made?

"Purchases"? Of all the apps on my Android phone, I only needed to pay for one. When I did that, it was about a year after I originally got the phone, so I never had to set anything up before that point. In fact, I can't exactly remember *how* I paid for it, since that's something I only did that one time.

Which is why, on average, iOS sports higher-quality software and more exclusive titles than Android. Software development isn't free and iOS users have shown a willingness to buy quality software. Money paid out to developers on each platform is in the billions for iOS and the hundreds of millions for Android, despite the much larger userbase on Android-powered phones.

^ No one is saying that software development is free (trial or limited functionality usually is, and is more widely offered on Android). However, saying that iOS users have shown willingness begs to question how much of that is due to perceived value or lack of choice. There are plenty of good quality free apps for Android. And yes, there are paid versions as well that provide additional features. I've seen the free apps on iOS and from my experience most are extremely limited; you've got to pay to get anything decent. And yes, it's good quality, but you have to pay for it. And... the fact that iOS has been around longer than Android is part of the reason why app sales have reached into the billions. Couple that will higher app price on average and that helps keep the revenue differences further apart.

If you want to talk about quality software, Apple missed something. Numbers stinks on the ipad. I got my iphone 4s and the ipad 2 mostly because of the applications. I figured most would be games and other junk and I would not be using them. After that I could pick and choose what I wanted. I wasn't really sure what the Android machines would have given the number of apps available to them. There was a quality issue that I was looking at too.

I have had an ibook that worked for 10 years. I have been considering taking it to an apple store to see if they would fix it. It's old, but I wonder what it would cost to fix it. I had an eMac that broke after 5 years (bad hard drive).

I had a PC that worked for over 12 years just fine. I am currently happy with my win7 laptop.

But is Apple a cult? If everyone at Cupertino CA went and drank Kool Aid, where would we get our iPads and iphones and such?!? ;)

How is it not?

Odd though that mswood and Google-searches agreed that you need either one.

Might want to recheck those searches

You can also use Paypal to make iTunes purchases which technically means you not giving Apple your credit information
