Is a date set for the trailer's online premier?

The Grissom was too small to fit the zero onto.

Really, who cares? So the registry on two background ships doesn't line up 100%. How is that a big deal considering how much this entire movie has changed?

I imagine Bond being agent 007 is just mindblowing.

Well the 00 are a special subset of agents who have a license to kill that they can use freely so I'm sure there's an agent 7 out there.

It's possible that at different points, Starfleet might alternate between parameters when entering Registries.

I suspect that the Grissom was created at some point After the Enterprise, dispite the lower registry number.

I also suspect that the Kelvin, being older, might be using a 4-digit derivative of the numbering system from the Enterprise-era, aka NX-01.

By the time we get to the Movie era, Starfleet might be running low on paint, so the ships were left bear metal, and the 0s in the registries were left out.

It could also be a simple stylistic change prompted by an Admiral with too much time on his/her hands.

I'm guessing by the time they got up to 514 they realized they were going to be up to 1000 soon.

So, at 514 they realized they'd have 1000 ships and added a zero, but when the got to 638 (the Grissom) they decided to remove the zero? Does that make sense to you

Again, why would they repaint it but not the Grissom?

I just don't know. Believe me I'm fuming. I can't believe it.

To Abrams and friends: WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS TO ME? LOOK AT ME I AM A MESS!
Having your childhood raped will do that to you, I guess. :(

Why does JJ keep violating people's childhoods?

He's that kinda guy. I spent most of my youth in a hospital painting 0004 0008 0015 0016 0023 0042 on anything that had a big enough saucer cos of him.

He's got Bad Man charms :(

Because he's an overrated hack and relaizes it, so raping the childhoods of Trek fans is how he compensates for his feelings of incompetence.

...Again, why would they repaint it but not the Grissom?

for the same reason that they made the uniforms look slightly different or the bridge looking different....

...because this film is changing a few things.

Four digit registry numbers with zeros as place holders seems perfectly logical to me, just like car license plate numbers (car registry numbers, by the way) use zeros for place holders, such as license plate number ABC-0010.

Back on topic, I wonder if we will see "leaked" versions of the trailer online on Friday the 14th or by the following Saturday morning.

You know, after reading many of your responses, I really wonder if you actually believe the insipid nonsense you keep spouting, or if you're just making these stupid comments in order to rouse people's ire, and in reality you could care less about Abrams, his movie, or the fact that a ship has a zero in front of its registry. I'm actually hoping it's the second, because at least that makes sense (as petty as that sense may be). If it's the first, then I really feel sorry for you that one movie that you haven't even seen yet has made you such a hateful, spiteful person.

Heaven save us from people who feel the need to make statements like these. How completely asinine. "Raping the childhoods of Trek fans"? SERIOUSLY?!? Please, seek help; for your sake more than anyone else's, because if you're really getting that bent out of shape, then you've got far bigger issues to work out than you think.

The fact that people are going so apesh*t about this U.S.S. Kelvin business is just staggering. So the number starts with a zero! Seriously, who gives a crap?!? Do you honestly mean to tell me that a slight gaffe like that is going to radically affect your enjoyment of this movie?

It's the same thing as Chris Pine's eye color. "OMG! His eyes are blue! Kirk's eyes aren't blue, they're brown! BLASPHEMY!!!" Folks, William Shatner's eyes are brown, so it just happened to be that Kirk's eyes were brown. If he'd had blue eyes, Kirk's would be blue. IT DOESN'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE. It's a minor detail that has no impact on the story.

I've always believed Star Trek fans were more open-minded. I figured they had to be, especially when they're bombarded by small-minded morons who think liking Star Trek means we all live in our parents' basements and have never kissed a girl. Yet, when I see abysmally stupid comments like "raping childhoods", I'm proven tragically wrong. Way to stay classy, Trek fans.

Yeah. I was one of the folks (on the official movie forums) who brought up the difference in eye color. But I did it as an offhand remark, not with the same tone as what you've posted.

Way to stay classy, indeed.

Well, then my statement wouldn't apply to you, would it? I thought I made it pretty clear that I'm referring to these extremists who would go so far as to call Abrams' attempt at Star Trek "raping their childhoods". Yes, these minior details can be frustrating, because one would think the writers would say, "Hey, didn't Shatner have brown eyes?" "Oh, yeah. Hey, Mr. Pine! We're going to set you up with brown contact lenses!" But, they're so minor, yet people are using them as nails to pound Abrams' coffin shut.

And, while my caricature of these extremists' reactions may seem overblown, I'm sorry to say that I've seen far stronger negativity from fans about the same issues.

So, while I appreciate your attempt to use my "stay classy" comment against me, it didn't really work. Sorry.

I like a a sci-fi world with odd variations. If everything conforms too well, if every eye is dotted and tea is crossed, even the best art direction becomes bland. Most roads in the U.S. have signs posting distances to major cities in miles. But here and there, usually close to borders with other countries, the distances are also posted in kilometers. I'm perfectly content to let the Kelvin's registry number stand at 0514 for that reason alone. It's an odd little inconsistency that tells us there might be a story behind it. Maybe the commander in charge of painting the Grissom didn't believe in leading zeroes and struck it as redundant.

I'm content to let Abrams et al do their own thing with Trek as long as they get some basics right. An optimistic future with advanced science and technology is one part of the foundation. Space exploration is another. Camaraderie among shipmates struggling against the unknown and their own differences is yet a third. I'm not at all bugged by trivial crap like the decision to start a hull number with a leading zero. Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds and all. I'm more annoyed by spotlights pointed into the faces of workstation operators on the Bridge than I am by that, and even that's just something I'll roll my eyes over and move on. Keep true to the basics, tell a good, interesting story with seriousness and a touch of humor, and I'll keep coming back for more.

But getting back to the TOPIC, do we have a confirmation this trailer will really be attached to QoS?

Let's see if this works, then.

Things like this:

are needlessly personal and should be avoided, particularly the sort of insinuation implied by "Please, seek help", etc.

Lose that right now and stick to discussing the topic, rather than another poster's supposed state of health or classiness, and we'll be okay. If The Wormhole wants to go on about zeroes in front of registry numbers -- whether in complete seriousness or (as I suspect) otherwise -- then he is allowed (within reason) to express such an opinion.

Dukhat, you've been here long enough to know better. Shatterhand, you're new, but so long as you keep in mind "post, not poster" as a general approach to posting, you should do just fine. Welcome to the board.

(Karl May, eh? Interesting... )

Sorry. I'm just getting annoyed at these self-proclaimed Star Trek "experts" and their complaints about things that are really insignificant. But I'll shut up now.

Back on topic...
I think we'll see a description of the trailer online before the 14th, when QoS reels arrive for pre screening in theaters...

The Kelvin's registry number doesn't need to make sense. In fact, registry numbers that make no sense are a bit of a Starfleet tradition.

Like I said in a post above, Abrams is changing the look of the bridge, so why not the ship registry system. If the Grissom appeared in this film, it would probably be 0638.

It's that simple.
