Is 9 the new 13?

I remember when most weekly network series had 39 episodes per season, 13 of which would be repeated during the summer -- unless the program had a summer replacement show.

Yep, I'm THAT old. :)

the original Star Trek had a 30 episode first season. dropping to 26 for series 2 and 24 for the final year. sign of the times i think but personally i prefer shorter seasons/ series. in the 3 years since Sherlock first aired there have been only 6 episodes so when new ones come out, they're treated like an event. it's the way TV should be... not plodding through 26 episodes like season three of Voyager! :lol:

I quite like shorter seasons like they do with Walking Dead and Mad Men. It's one if those quality over quantity things.

Yeah, but those shows are driven centrally by single main characters.

Just like 24 could have easily done 10 ep seasons if it were titled anything other than '24'. And House absolutely could have had 10 ep seasons.

I think the more characters you have who are important the more episodes you should have for season. For instance, Game of Thrones really should have more episodes in a season.

@scotpens

I started watching Twilight Zone, I saw the number of episodes and I was like WHHHAAAA?!

The only episodes not on Netflix are the hour long ones from season 4, I wonder if they're any good.

Melrose Place (1992 - 1999)

Season 1: 32 episodes
Season 2: 32 episodes
Season 3: 32 episodes
Season 4: 34 episodes
Season 5: 34 episodes
Season 6: 27 episodes
Season 7: 35 episodes

They're not without interest, but the general consensus is that TZ worked better at the half-hour length, which is why they went back to that format in Season Five. Too many of the hour-long eps feel padded and take too long to get to the typical TZ twist ending . . . which you probably see coming by the time they get there!
