Iron Man 2 - Rourke's Whiplash revealed!

I'm not familiar with either Whiplash or Crimson Dynamo from the comics, but taken on its own, I like the look of Rourke's character. Had they had another armoured villain as the big bad in this movie, it would have just looked like a reprise of part 1. I think the Doc Oc meets Mad Max look of this photo is kinda cool. And I like that you can see Rourke's face - it's a shame when great actors are cast as bad guys, yet end up hidden behind a mask - Dafoe as Green Goblin, Jeff Bridges as Stone, etc.

Well, they pulled it off with the villains whose faces change by having them be villains in their ordinary IDs first (Harvey Dent, Stane, Blonsky) and then just have them be their masked/transformed selves for like 20 minutes near the end.

^ Yeah, fair enough, but I just think that being able to see the actor's face works better in live action movies. Can you imagine an X-Men movie where you couldn't see Ian McKellen's facial expressions or what Heath Ledger's Joker performance would have been like had he been behind a mask? Even Harvey Dent/ Aaron Eckhart was still visible once transformed into Two-Face.

Obviously with some characters such as Scarecrow, the mask is pretty much essential to the performance. But when you have two guys fighting whilst head to toe in armour, the risk is that it ends up just looking like, say, the end of Transformers. Though to be fair, Favreau managed to avoid that with IM.

Not really sure what to say. I guess I'm a little underwhelmed, I hope that Iron Man 2 doesn't suffer from the too many villans syndrome comic book sequels tend to. I'm looking forward to seeing Scarlet Johannson as Black Widow though. Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer is interesting.

I'm looking forward to seeing her as Black Widow, too. I have some trepidation, though, about hearing her as Black Widow.

Favreau actually showed the faces of Stark and Stane in several scenes when they both were wearing the suits by having the camera appear to be inside the helmet. It was pretty cool idea.

^ Yeah, that helped ensure that it wasn't just a CGI wankfest. But there's only so many times the characters can do this so I'd be happy if Rourke's character doesn't wear a mask.

Mind you, with all that plastic surgery, Mickey's not that much more expressive than the IM mask, is he...?!

This may be Whiplash version 1. Perhaps the character will evolve during the movie like IM did. Just a thought.
At first blush I'm not overwhelmed with the pic. Is he in a kilt? Pants? Shorts? I could go with any attire based on that pic.

Playing a wait and see but I'll be at the movie regardless.
Also, count me among those eager to see Scarlet as Black Widow!!!

I think you're probably right, Captain Craig. I have a feeling this is a prototypical stage of the character's appearance.

Underwhelmed, as well. Rourke is a fine actor, but this definitely looks questionable. He looks more suited for a villain or arbitrary character in a Mad Max movie than someone belonging in the Iron Man universe, but we'll see.

Well maybe its like Whiplash's "mark 1" as a test to see how it performs against the real deal, he gets his ass whipped and then goes back and gradually gets more armor. Maybe thinking that his powered whips are all he needs and then starts adding plates and such to it and maybe evolves into the Crimson Dynamo, or Titanium Man or something with Black Widow's help.

Although I still wonder how the Widow's going to be the villaness in this piece, since when she started out and for quite a long time she was a Soviet spy. So what, is she going to be a Russian spy that's sent by the Mandarin?

Rourke doesn't look very dangerous in that getup.

Right now it looks as if he'll be "Whip whip whippity whip" and then Stark will point his tank killer wrist missile and blow Whiplash to Mars. Cue "Iron Man" song.
