Invasion of the Dinos...

I first watched this 3rd Doctor romp back in '93. The pbs version that I had taped begun with the doctor and sarah already back from the middle ages and in a transport to the center. Then they hop out when a dino materializes in front of the transport and the two guards get out and start shooting. A short time later, after a brief encounter with a man from the age of king john, they run back into the brigadier.

Ok, it was fine, the episode begun there, and ended after operation golden age finished at the end of the show.

But, just recently, as I was going through the entire series, i found the original start of the episode! The pbs version had cut that out entirely, and for over 16 years I had not realized that something was missing.

Are there any other instances that people can think of, where entire chunks of one of the shows are just missing or gone? I love the episode, and finding the extra first episode just makes it that much better, there was no detraction from the enjoyment. It takes Mike Yates down development that some of the unit people sorely needed.

There's one more - aside, obviously, from the numerous Hartnell and Troughton stories where one or more episodes is missing entirely on video, andwhich were never sold to PBS as a result.

Like Invasion of the Dinosaurs, Planet of the Daleks has one episode which only exists in black and white (* until now), and rather than have the serial suddenly switch from B&W to colour and/or back in omnibus versions, the B&W episodes were simply missed out of the versions sent to America for PBC to run in the mid-1980s. But whereas it was part one of Dinosaurs which was missing, it was part three of PotD. Which made for a bit of an odd jump, but not as big a one as you might think...

* until now, as part three has been restored to colour for the DDVD release due out later this year.

The ending of part two of The Time Warrior was also edited as was the ending of part three of Horror Of Fang Rock.

Thinking about it, I believe that also happened to the final scenes of a few Hartnell stories, where a lead-in to a missing next story would be deleted. And, IIRC, the Hartnell-Troughton regeneration was rather clumsily tacked onto the end of The War Machines.

Now I'm dying to know, between which episodes of Planet of the Daleks was the missing segment? And, what part of The Time Warrior was edited out?

Well, part three out of the six: if IIRC, that's mainly the bit where the Doctor is a prisoner in a Dalek cell, and the Thals head in on a rescue mission, but I've not rewatched it in ages (it's not th best story ever made, it's not even the best Dalek story ever made, or even the best Pertwee Dalek story ever made, or... oh, 'Say what you think Bones,' it's dreadful, but it does have Pertwee's little speech about courage not being about not being afraid, it's about doing what you have to even when you're afraid. Which is, ironically, one of my favourite bits of Who ever, and might well be in the 'missing' episode).

As for time Warrior: suspect it's a short cut, in the recaps between episodes, but I'd not heard of that till now.

This is what was cut from the PBS omibus version of The Time Warrior.

Sarah, Hal and two men-at-arms manage to sneak into Irongron’s castle after knocking out a dozing guard. Hal doesn’t think this is job for women, but Sarah points out that she’s the only one who knows what the Doctor looks like.
Irongron admires his knew weapons and reveals his plans to Linx and Bloodaxe to attack Wessex castle at dawn, not knowing that Sarah and Hal are listening in at the window.
Meanwhile Rubeish has released the Doctor from Linx’s machine. The Doctor thanks the professor then sets off to find Miss Smith.
No sooner does he leave Linx’s lab, he runs straight into Irongron and Bloodaxe. The Doctor uses his Venusian Acid to escape them and dash outside. In the courtyard, the Doctor eludes Irongron’s men while Sarah and Hal watch. The Doctor trips over some straw and falls to the ground. Irongron walks up, raises his battle-axe and bellows, “He who strikes Irongron, dies!”

The omibus version goes straight from the Doctor being held captive to his escape from Irongron's castle, without the battle in the courtyard and the cliffhanger itself.

There's a weird edit in Ark In Space where they meet the nearly-fully mutated Noah, but apparentally that was how it was aired originally....

A lot of the old VHS were also missing bits of scenes. Unfortunately this carries over to the Netflix instant view, since they are based on the VHS/PBS copies, I believe.

That edit was in the original tx: at the last minute, the producer decided that the lines where Noah begs Vira to kill him were a bit too strong.
