Introducing James T. Kirk

Now 8(?) episodes in and I am surprised there is not more with Sam Kirk. I wonder why he's been so little used.

It seems like Sam is only there for that cutesy switcharoo in the first episode. Even in ep2 he was basically a red shirt.

Younger Kirk could have been strict and stern with the cadets in his role as Academy instructor or teaching assistant or whatever a Lieutenant might be, while outside of that setting he let his hair down. Long hair, of course. Since he liked "that longhair stuff." Right? *crickets chirping*

Kor

Yet he still gets branded Herbert by the space hippies when he finally meets them. Sometimes, life just ain't fair, man. But they grokked Spock no problem.

I expect it will be the USS Lydia Sutherland, that's a pretty well established piece of Beta canon.

6-7 years before TOS is still a bit early for that, isn't it?

Seems like he'd be a senior LT coming off his Farragut tour or maybe a LCDR and either first officer of a larger ship or captain of a smaller scout or something like that. Lydia Sutherland was a ship he lost right before he was offered the Enterprise, if I remember my beta canon correctly.

There's the James T. Kirk portrayed by William Shatner in TOS, TAS, and seven films, and there's the exaggerated pop-culture caricature of Jim Kirk which seems to form the basis of the version played by Chris Pine.
That's the problem. Because the James T. Kirk from TOS was so different from the James T. Kirk from his 6 TOS films. I can't imagined that the TOS Kirk would cheat in his Academy test, steal the Enterprise, etc like in the TOS films. He was so proper. So did Kirk had multiple personality, or it simply just inconsistent writing?

He's a fictional character, so the latter.

part is inconsistent writing. But it can also be explained as the overall arc of the character and how he ages.

I mean, in TMP you can see how desperate he is to get back into space, how regretful he is for accepting promotion and that carry’s over to WOK but you throw in the “getting old” factor and in SFS as he’s lost his “brother”, he’s grief stricken (Sarek making him relive it doesn’t help) so he’s willing to do what it takes.

Kelvin Kirk deals with some of it in Beyond but he comes to the realization that accepting a promotion would be a mistake before it’s too late.
