Introducing James T. Kirk

Farragut and Republic are his only known pre-Enterprise assignments. Though these guys love mining the novels, so maybe for the Sacajawea?

Refresh me on the Sacajawea- that rings a bell, so I'm guessing it's from a book. What sort of ship was it and when did Kirk supposedly command her?

Canonically, there is no indication of when Kirk and Spock first met, with various tie-ins postulating it to be as early as when the two of them were at the Academy or as late as just before WNMHGB.
From "An Embarrassment of Dooplers" we know that Kirk was trying to get into that famous Starfleet party, but wasn't allowed in and ended up drinking at a bar outside, which implies that he wasn't on a super prestigious ship like Enterprise. Maybe he met Spock while waiting in line, Spock took a liking too him and then decided to go with Kirk instead of attending the party.

Uhm, she may wear a red sweater but she is referred to as 'Lieutenant Saavik' and that is the rank on her collar. Again, I believe the idea is that a commissioned officer with some time in grade returns to the academy for a post-graduate command course.
But that's how the military does things. We aren't implying that Starfleet...
He could be a Lt. Commander and in command of a ship. That's how it works in real life.
Or are we?

I'll admit I'll need to refresh my memory of that episode, but I thought the implication was that Kirk and Spock both attended that party only to get bored by it and spent the rest of the night at that bar, sort of a parallel of Boimler in that very episode?

I just looked up the transcript and the bartender says "He and his pointy-eared pal tried to aprty-crash back in, uh, what was it? 2260-something.", which sounds to me like trying to get into the party without being invited, but English isn't my first language, and I have attended about two parties in my life, so I could be totally wrong there.

I have attended about two parties in my life,
Well, that's two more than I have, so I yield to your expertise here. :)

Okay, on a more serious note, I think I was clutching on to the fact they were hanging out together and the "2260 something" date and assumed it to be after Kirk started commanding the Enterprise. I guess there's enough vagueness to it to make it open to interpretation.

It would be interesting if we caught Kirk in transition: Leaving the Farragut for his own first command.

I think given Kirk's meteoric rise through the ranks, he would also probably achieve that first command at the rank of LCDR or CDR, not CAPT. (Although he would still be addressed as 'captain' aboard his own command)

Oh just go all the way with it and have Kirk commanding the USS Kelvin. Don't pass up an opportunity to reinforce small universe syndrome.

Kirk's wearing captain's rank in the spy pictures...

That's what leads me to believe that he's commanding a Scout or other smaller ship in the 4 or 5 years before he assumes command of the Enterprise.

And I hope there is some line that Pike says, "Sam Kirk's little brother?" or something to that effect. Something that kind of shows that at this stage, he's James T. Kirk, not JAMES T. KIRK.

Could it be the Prime Kobayashi Maru test and he's only dressed as a Captain?

Number One: So subspace chatter says that the James Kirk kid who cheated on the Kobayashi Maru, you know Sam Kirk's brother, is on his way to becoming the youngest flag officer in Starfleet and may even be taking your place as captain of the Enterprise.

Pike: Over my dead body.

Number One: Over your wheelchair bound melted body, you mean.

Pike: :weep:

Sad beep

I also think it's too soon and unnecessary. Obviously you bring him in when they have a passing of the torch moment at the end of the series but why so much earlier?

Yeah I agree. We have enough legacy characters in the show that I was more than satisfied. To be bring in Jim Kirk is unnecessary. Let learn more about Sam Kirk without seeing his brother taking the oxygen out of the room. The only thing I can think of is they are already setting up a show to show Jim Kirk's first two years on the enterprise.

Indeed. But, who knows?
All we know for certain is they've cast someone in the role of James T. Kirk, put a yellow tunic on him and took a photo of him in the Big Chair™. After that is all conjecture and fanboy panic, which is exactly what they knew would be the result. We'll find out what's what eventually. I'm in no hurry.
