Uhm, she may wear a red sweater but she is referred to as 'Lieutenant Saavik' and that is the rank on her collar. Again, I believe the idea is that a commissioned officer with some time in grade returns to the academy for a post-graduate command course.
A sea fearing captain sounds intriguing. The Trouble with Tribbles and several other Klingon episodes have led me to think there was a significant altercation with the Klingons not too long after Kirk left the academy. A war will bring promotion very quickly to able officers so Kirk's young captaincy isn't implausible.
From the context currently, I assume Lieutenant Moustache goes and visits his brother who is commanding another ship and a adventure occurs. Maybe he brings Uhura with him and we get that introduction. I don't think he will be on the Enterprise at this time. Pike is only supposed to meet him briefly when Kirk takes command of the Enterprise.
Saavik and the blond guy at navigation (named Croy in the novelization) had the higher ranks than the other cadets. Presumed to be doing Command School and thus the Kobayashi Maru scenario. Saavik has a white colour slash on her red sleeve stripe in ST II, but it is reversed for ST III (white collar and red colour slash on her white sleeve stripe), suggesting graduation? The wrong episode pic appeared on premiere day of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" on "Paramount+" in Australia. This is actually a teaser promo pic of the new James T Kirk, who won't be seen on the series for some time, although we did see his older brother, George Samuel Kirk from Episode 1. No, Kirk met him when he was promoted to Fleet Captain. No idea what Kirk was doing at the time or how many times he met Pike previously. Apparently he knew him well enough to call him "Chris". Which implies a relationship beyond one meeting.
Here's a thought. If Kirk does have his own command, could some "legacy" characters be serving on his ship? Maybe a cranky doctor or an engine loving Scotsman?
i think the Chris thing is because they are both captains. I don't think they met before the promotion.
I used to believe that Kirk met Pike once at the transfer-of-command ceremony. I’m beginning to think I’m conflating the scene from “The Menagerie” with the lines about seeing Kodos once in “The Conscience of the King”. In any event, here’s the dialogue: MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike? KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain. MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active. KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years. Pike could have been made fleet captain while still commanding Enterprise, the occasion of Kirk meeting him. Later, Kirk “took over the Enterprise from him.” We know now that Pike is on a five-year mission and that Spock served with him for 11 years, so there’s time for two such missions, promotion, and turning command over to Kirk. Also, I’ve long thought that Kirk’s familiarity with Pike suggested more of a history than either a brief meeting or membership in the Starship Captains Club would warrant. (h/t @Serveaux )
I always got the impression that Scotty was on the Enterprise before Kirk. I could see Mitchell on Kirk’s other ship. I doubt it will be the Sacajawea though.
Farragut and Republic are his only known pre-Enterprise assignments. Though these guys love mining the novels, so maybe for the Sacajawea?
If I was to show him, I would have as a Lieutenant Commander at this time. Third in command of a ship.
