Interesting Facts About You That Few People Know About

^
Modesty aside, I swear on my gold plated deflector dish TOS USS Enterprise, it does not come from me.

I was a vocalist in a punk rock band for a few years.

As a graduate student, I won a national competition one year, for best article. I received a 500 dollar prize, and had my article published in the Canadian Journal of History.

I found out later that I had to report my prize money as income. :censored:

What made that especially satisfying was that I almost didn't make it into graduate school. My marks as an undergraduate were good overall, but not outstanding, and I took four years off after graduation, working in a plastic-container factory.

When I did finally apply for grad school, one of my two referees was dying of cancer, and the other had retired. If I had waited another year, I wouldn't have been able to obtain the necessary letters of recommendation.

On top of that, after I completed my MA and had been accepted into a PhD program, I discovered that the History department had felt they were taking a chance on me when they admitted me. My supervisor described the writing sample I had submitted as "highly unpromising." He said they were all very pleased that their gamble had paid off.

So, I guess I've done a lot of growing up in the past fifteen years or so. If there are any other late bloomers out there, take heart, and don't give up.

* When I was in 3rd grade, I beat the hell out of a bully twice my size, and shoved him up against a wall, raising him off the ground several inches before headbutting him, making his nose bleed.
Damn. Where were you when I was in high school? ;)

It was one of the first indicators that I had a terribly powerful temper. This guy was twice my size, and I was a little squirt in 3rd grade. I didn't start really growing until I was about 13. As for my temper, it was years later when I finally mastered that temper and started channeling it into far more positive and constructive uses. No one picked on me, though! :D

J.

I think you're gifted with the Force. ;) I would like to be your apprentice.

How did I miss this thread...

Well I love to contribute and I have a few weird things that people might find interesting.

- I am ambidextrous and use both hands freely. To be honest, I don't know which hand I am going to favor that day until I brush my teeth first thing in the morning. I can write with both as well.

- I worked as a go go boy at a gay bar my freshman year in college. Two nights a week gave me enough money to pay tuition, books and rent.

- Even though I am a rather small person, at 5'7" and 140 lbs I can still drink men twice my size under the table with barely a hangover the next day.

- Animals are not afraid of me, even the wild ones. Birds will sit right beside me. Squirrels will take food out of my hands. Normally vicious dogs won't bark but once or twice and then lay on my feet.

- I am a might bit psychic. I have always known things that I should not be able to know. :shifty:

And Kestra... you are absolutely amazing. I would love to meet you so I can hug you. You blow my mind dear heart!

- I used to be able to ride on horseback, but it's been quite a long time ago :o.
- I've cycled for most of my life, when I was highschool I'd cycle 32km each day except during the winter when I would take the bus.
- I have never ever broken any bone in my body. *knocks on table*

I was never that attractive or sexy. :( Although sometimes I wonder what it would be like for me if I were to ... offer my services ... under the right circumstances, of course.

Man, where were you when I was 19 - 20? :D When I was living in another country (on vacation), drinking seemed to be one of the guys' favorite pastimes. That's when I learned to drink hard liquor (but anymore, been sober for years).

On that topic, I have never broken any bones either. I have also never had any kind of major surgery, nor have I ever needed to stay overnight in a hospital. >keeps fingers crossed that none of these records are broken anytime soon<

Sign me up as another member in the no broken bone club. I have plenty of dislocations, lacerations, and sprains to make up for it. (My favorite athletic activities were gymnastics, ballet, and figure skating.)

The big toe on my left foot tingles and is mostly numb.
The tips of my big toes went numb late last year after I created a workshop in my garage and started spending more time on my feet. They are still that way. :(

In the 2nd grade gifted class I stabbed myself with a pencil. The graphite tip broke off and got lodged in my thumb, and the wound healed around it, so I've had a small chunk of pencil in my thumb ever since.
I have a splinter deep in my right thumb, that I got in the late 80's and promptly forgot about. I think I was 11 or 12 at the time.

I'm a walking encyclopedia of nuclear power plant information, and I can identify over 100 different kind of caterpillars.

This does not make one whit of difference to how I see you. I think you're lovely.

I'm just sorry you suffered so much growing up. :(

I just want to echo a couple other people, and say that it looks to me like you've dealt with it much better than you think you have.

Courage comes with acceptance. You may still have a little way to go, but the strides you've been able to make, in finding someone (plus in letting that someone find you), in being able to say "enough" to your family....those are huge things.

And keep in mind, people with no scars at all wear makeup...the fact that you do, too, doesn't make you less than they.

Add me to the list of people here that think you're a gem among us, Kestra, because clearly what you've had to deal with has made you into the positive, empathetic person you are.

And Kestra... you are absolutely amazing. I would love to meet you so I can hug you. You blow my mind dear heart!

I'm not going to say too much because I think MISC has had far too much Kestra-sappiness lately, but I did want to tell all of you I appreciate the comments more than you could know.

Pencil lead is made of graphite, not lead, so there's no danger of lead poisoning. I would worry about infections and the like, though.

^ I wouldn't want *any* foreign object stuck inside me that wasn't supposed to be there. I don't really care how harmless it was. I'd want it out of there ASAP.

I'm great in bed.

And when I say great, I mean great! Out of every man that has ever lived, there have been maybe 10 that were better at it then me.
